There may be some alternate explanation, but this looks bad.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/padres-ripped-san-diego-gay-men-chorus-anthem-mixup-article-1.2645908

First paragraph:
A mixup during the singing of the national anthem before Saturday night’s San Diego Padres game has landed the team in hot water.

The 100 members of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus who stepped onto the field at Petco Park to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” were instead drowned out by a recording of a woman singing the anthem through the stadium’s PA system.

The Padres released a short statement during their 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and apologized to the chorus for the error. But the singing group is not yet ready to put the incident behind them.

“What should have been a night of joy and celebration at Petco Park last night, instead turned into a nightmare raising serious questions about homophobia with the San Diego Padres organization and its relationship with the LGBT community,” read the chorus’ statement.

@Lash,
This wasn't a "technical error." Someone is responsible for making the decision to broadcast the recording and then broadcasting the recording in its entirety. Someone is responsible for failing to stop the recording and starting over, allowing the men's chorus to do what they were invited to do: Sing the Anthem. It was clearly an insult to the men's chorus.

@Debra Law,
It's boggling to come to the realization that this was actually planned - and that nobody stopped it. Wonder how many people were in on it - and how high up the food chain the involvement was.

In other news, the south gets a break on being the center of homophobia. Thanks, California!

This alleged "control room mistake" was preceded by demands from the Padres organization that the performers pay for admittance:

Quote:
Three days before the game, San Diego Padres representatives aggressively sought to prevent singers from performing the National Anthem unless they purchased a ticket to the game—even if they did not plan to stay for the game—which was not part of any previous discussion or written or verbal agreement and would have cost the small, community-based non-profit thousands of dollars. The demand eventually was rescinded on Friday following repeated complaints made by SDGMC and San Diego Pride to San Diego Padres management.

With this as background, we call on the San Diego Padres and Major League Baseball to immediately launch a full and transparent investigation into the incident to determine if someone or some people intentionally engaged in anti-gay discrimination or a hate crime by playing a female’s voice to represent a group of gay men with the purpose of denigrating and/or ridiculing gay men. The historic significance of such an act is not lost on the LGBT community—especially in relation to professional sports—and added to the depth of embarrassment experienced by the singers and their families.

It seems like some people made the deliberate choice to make it financially impossible for the group to perform, and when that didn't work, they chose to humiliate the group.
