Does 'I was a priest' mean that he is no longer a priest?

If a priest introduces himself to the believers, saying, "I am Ishikawa. I became a priest in 2005."

Does I became a priest mean he is no longer a priest. Instead it means "He was ordained a priest in 2005", and is no longer a priest.

In other words, has the priest made a mistake in using I became a priest?

Thanks.

No. He didn't say "I was a priest.'

"I became a priest in 2005."simply states when he took his orders. It does not clarify if he is still a priest or moved on to something else. His current title or sentences to follow will clarify everything.

@tanguatlay,
What kind of "Priest" ? The natural kind or the formal one ?
The former is a permanent condition. (I am way past Religion here)
The hidden meaning of the word means teacher. Some humans, few, have the fate of having a personality prone to teach.

@tanguatlay,
He is telling people the year of ordination.

If he doesn't qualify that information by saying he has left the priesthood, then he is still a priest.
