Granted, I'm a writer, and most of my posts are in the word games, English, riddles, music, and original writing forums, so maybe my opinion here is a little different from the norm. But, when I post, I hope that my posts are making someone else's life more interesting in some way; and, if I am very successful, I hope to actually provide a new way of thinking or perspective for, again, someone. If numerous people read, understand, and appreciate what I have said, then I have gone past my expectations. Again, maybe I see things too artisically, but if I can affect someone else's day in a positive manner, then I have made a "remotely measurable impact on the world" in the best way I can, and I will notice that change, as will the people with whom I share my thoughts.
Maybe I am not changing election results or movie sales or anything like that, but I hope that my posts can serve to impact the world somehow, and I can assure you that I am not a narcissist. If anything, I often suffer from an inferiority complex. And, I have resolved to stay out of most political debates, but I still decided to make this post, although I am not furthering the political discussion at all.
Smog, if it pleases you to feel that you have had a remotely measurable impact on the world around us by entertaining someone with your posts, then who am I to nay say your pleasure?
Perhaps you believe that a butterfly flapping it's wings in Asia leads to hurricanes in the Atlantic.
I continue to maintain that it is a conceit to even hope for numerous people to, in some way, be moved by your words.
If your postings please, inspire, or challenge a single person, they are of value. The overwhelming majority of us live very contained lives which while not having far reaching influence, can have enormous value.
The measure of the value of our lives is not determined by the number of people who read our poems or hear our songs.
