Will £200m polar research ship REALLY be named Boaty McBoatface? Poll closes with spoof name way ahead of the competition

Boaty McBoatface has officially topped a poll over the name for a new polar research ship as the competition launched by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) closed.
The suggestion received 124,109 votes - more than three times that of its closest contender.
However, the £200 million research vessel is not guaranteed to be christened the winning suggestion - that final decision lies with science minister Jo Johnson.

The name was put forward by former BBC radio presenter James Hand, who has since apologised and said the storm it created had 'legs of its own'.

TOP FIVE SUGGESTIONS
1. RRS Boaty McBoatface - 124,109

2. RRS Poppy-Mai - 34,371

3. RRS Henry Worsley - 15,231

4. RRS It's bloody cold here - 10,679

5. RRS David Attenborough - 10,284

He said that while he stands by Boaty McBoatface as a 'brilliant name' for a boat, he actually voted for RRS David Attenborough to be the new name.

The second most-voted name was the RRS Poppy-Mai - named after a 16-month-old girl whose father 'married' her in an attempt to give her the wedding of her dreams after it was revealed she had incurable cancer.

The RRS Henry Worsley, named after the explorer who died trying to make the first unassisted solo crossing of the Antarctic in January, was the third most popular with more than 15,000 votes.

The NERC thanked everyone for their suggestions on its website posting: ' We are no longer accepting suggestions to name our ship as we have now reached the closing date of April 16.

We've had an extremely high volume of suggestions and will now review all of the suggested names. The final decision will be announced in due course.'
The research council received more than 7,000 entries during the one-month competition period.
Some of the more unusual of the suggestions included the RRS Onion Knight, RRS I Like Big Boats & I Cannot Lie, and RRS Capt'n Birdseye Get Off My Cod.
The RRS Bowie, RRS Kanye West and RRS The Miss Cilla Black were also floated as possible names.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said the final decision will be taken by science minister Jo Johnson.

Commuters salute guard after 'Trainy McTrainface' pulls into Waterloo

http://static.standard.co.uk/s3fs-public/styles/story_large/public/thumbnails/image/2016/03/22/14/Trainy.jpg

Commuters were given cause for morning cheer thanks to a railway worker's nod to the 'Boaty McBoatface' saga.

A South West Trains service from Portsmouth to Waterloo was given the humourous name 'Trainy McTrainface'.

Matthew Fifield, a 17-year-old kitchen porter, said the name change improved his mood when he boarded the train at Haslemere, just before 8.40am on Tuesday.

He told the Standard: "My trains were all delayed today so it brightened my morning to see it."

Other commuters took to Twitter to salute the cheeky worker.

A South West Trains spokeswoman confirmed the "one-off" name change was genuine.

She said: "It is a one-off by one of our creative guards who wanted to bring a smile to the face of our customers."

It comes after a public poll to name a polar research ship due to venture to Antarctica saw more than 16,000 votes for Boaty McBoatface.

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) invited the public to submit ideas for the name the £200 million vessel should bear on its hull.

The instigator, former BBC presenter James Hand, has since apologised to the NERC after his suggestion sparked the mass vote.

@farmerman,
Good thing I never had a child, since I was absolutely going to name it Farty McFartface.

When they had the contest for Prince Williams first kid, I was disappointed Princess Hashtag didn't win.

@Lordyaswas,
I hadn't followed this one closely enough. So the RRS It's bloody cold here option appeals to me the most. Still? I'm glad Boaty McBoatface won the prestigious honor. I never have been so proud of you Brits as I am today! Very Happy

@tsarstepan,
In actual fact, what am amazing PR scoop it would be if they were to go with Boaty McBoatface.

What a wonderful way of encouraging kids to learn about science and conservation.
If I were the Brit Government I would copyright the name straight away, and work on the range of merchandise.

Books, TV progs, Fillums.....the thing could be as big as Thomas the Tank Engine!

I can see kids queuing at various harbours around the world when Boaty is due to visit.

I have a dream......
