How to distinguish words?

I want to know how to distinguish some synonym.For me a Chinese student,I can't see any difference between‘peculiar’ ‘special’‘partitular’.So it's difficult for me to use them suitable.

It would help if you showed a model sentence to figure out which one to use.
Depending on the sentence, the differences would be meaningful or subtle.

particular = notable; fussy
