@Banana Breath,
Rest assured, scientist Barbie is all-business. She tests all the pickles for firmness strictly by the book.

@Banana Breath,
I don't know . . .

Regarding Mattel's woman scientist, she's too focused on her work, as is evidenced by her pre-anorexic appearance--no time for adequate nourishment And apparently the no-knees look is in (how in hell does she pull that off). Also, I can't believe she's going to be warm enough dressed like that. And if she does get cold, she won't be able to button up her white coat since it has no buttons. If you ask me, she's dressed to be a distraction to the men working in the same lab, and my guess is that the reason for that is to lower the efficiency of the male scientists in order to make her own under par efficiency seem satisfactory.

And look at her neck. I won't say anything about it because I don't think I have to.

I'm only kidding. I think Mattel did a fine job creating an image of what a woman scientist should look like.

@Banana Breath,
myself, I was involved in that a lot of years ago, lower level many years, but not-not a scientist. There are papers where I am author, never first, and a zillion thanks-to-stuff.

My female scientist friends varied greatly.

This was around the same time a pal, medical illustrator but also childrens' book artist, worked for Mattel for a bit.

I'm a friend, far as I know, as I haven't heard back him from a recent trying to connect, one time recently, of Tom Forsythe, the guy that made it to the Supremes re Mattel. I suppose he is barraged, as our friendship was now long ago.

We were all fairly argumentative over dinners. I still think of them as 'the horrible couple', re their arguing. I liked her too.

Anyway, he did a baking barbies photo..

I take him as a good guy.

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in the assumptions made by the (I think only) men that have so far posted.

Wallette's girlfriend Dazzle is a bonafide woman type scientist who travels to jungles as well as symposiums, teaches at the University of Texas, Austin, and is far more beautiful, shapely and better dressed than any of those Barbie dolls shown. Incredibly to those here, she's managed to combine brains and looks, competes in triathalons and has earned the respect of fellow academics and scientists. She wears jeans and t shirts sometimes, suits other times, and even puts on club attire when she goes out dancing.
How dare she?

I wasn't aware there was a rule that said there was a certain type of look a scientist, male or female, must have.

Does it apply to men also that they can't be attractive and be intelligent also?

@chai2,
Would you get a load of these damn bitches? Trying to make you think they have a brain in their heads? They need to either scrub off that makeup or get spread eagle on a bed so we know what to think about them. It's all so confusing when women just won't look the way many mens stereotypes of them dictate.

On Radio 4 today they asked what Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel and Frauke Petry had in common. Obviously they're all successful female politicians, but they're also all Chemists.

There is a difference in looks between a women scientist and a women married with science like Curie.

What is the point of this thread?

Barbie is a line of dolls that is targeted toward girls, in the traditional sense of the word "girl". It remains a very popular toy, lots of girls want them. Every doll in the line has the traditional view of "prettiness". That is the point of the line of toys and the reason for its continuing popularity.

Is the point that Barbie shouldn't make a science doll? Or is the point that the science doll shouldn't follow the normal standards of prettiness in this sort of toy.
