Effect and Affect

A friend and I are in disagreement on the title of a high school project and need some help. The title now reads HOW DO ACIDS EFFECT METALS. I say it should read HOW DO ACIDS AFFECT METALS.

Why would EFFECT work?

You are correct, it should be affect. Effect can be used as a verb, but it means to have caused a desired result--The new law eventually effected a change in peoples' attitudes. It can also mean to bring into being, or to put into operation. But in this case, you would use affect, which means to have an effect on or to change.

@DMperfection101,
You are right of course.

Whether you being right brings the expected effect on your stubborn friend is something that will affect your grade.

@DMperfection101,
When in doubt about which one to use, just write uffect. Your reader will figure it was a typo and will mentally make the appropriate adjustment based on the context in which it was used.

I'm kidding, of course. When it comes to those words, just remember that effect is what something has, while affect is what something does.
