a few years ago i watched this independent film about this lady who's haunted by her miscarried child. well that was the scarry part. it was about these kids in thier 20's in the 19th century who did whitch craft as a joke to make all thier fears come true and then it really happens. the one girl's child comes back and- wow. scarred me half to death. i wish i could remember the name of it... Sad

I could never watch Hellraiser all the way through. The guy gave me nightmares esp. in the beginning when he's sewing his face on.

Agree with the Exorcist. Also thought Jaws and the first Nightmare on Elm Street were terrifying when I was a kid.

For an Australian flick Picnic at Hanging Rock left me unable to sleep for a week in my first year of high school - it is about a group of school girls who go missing on a camping trip at the turn of last century. Based on a true story it was one of Peter Weir's first films.

The Ring is Jap version. Series 4... it's truly, deeply scary. I remember till today:"One in Four of you will DIE!"

Final Destination 2 did it as well. I keep seeing signs everywhere. >.<

Glad someone was scared by "The Grunge" except the fear of showers actually began with "Psycho" and it's leagues ahead of "The Grunge."

Brian De Palma's "Sisters" scared me more than "The Exorcist".

I'll go with "The Haunting", with Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. Like most scary films, best viewed late at night and alone.

That one scared me even with commercial breaks, or perhaps because of them....purchased the DVD and found it less frightening than it was back in my youth.

Ditto on "The Haunting" and I've expressed this before. When I first saw it, it made my blood run dry. It made one believe ghosts exists but not wondering the halls in white sheets. It was more psychological fear that others have tried but fell short. The remaked is a dismal failure.

Scary movie
I can not remember the name but it was about the tooth fairy haunting a man throughout his life and a boy who was also being haunted by her. Scared the heck out of me. Whats the name, it is fairly recent + - 7 years.

jhnthmn,
"Darkness Falls" made in 2002 is a horror film about the tooth fairy. The movie is known by other titles such as "The Tooth Fairy", "Don't Peek", "Fear of the Dark".

Recently saw Dreamcatcher and Cabin Fever. The first had some scary moments (but the stoy had unexplained gaps) the second had none.

I am to see Darkwolf one of these days. Has anyone got an opinion on that one? Werewolf flicks usually freak me out (due to a childhood trauma), but most of them have such lame stories. My favourites are The Howling and An American Werewolf in London, with Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps as runners up. A mild werewolf flick (as in not violent or very scary) is Wilderness, although I thought Amanda Ooms was not strong enough as an actress to carry this film.

Am open to suggestions if you hapen to know any other palatable films containing lycantropes (that are not in the list):

Abbot & Costello meet Frankenstein +
An American Werewolf in Paris +
The Curse of the Werewolf -
Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban ++
The Howling II -
The Howling III --
I was a Teenage Werewolf -
In the Company of Wolves +++
Little Red Ridinghood (Roald Dahl) +++
Silver Bullet ++
Teen Wolf +
Underworld +
Van Helsing -
Wolf ++
The Wolfman +

If you liked Dreamcatcher check out the book, it was much better then the movie and it explains those gaps.

The original version of Dawn Of the Dead. I watched it at neighbors house years ago, and had to walk home in the dark by myself.

After many years of filmmakers trying to scare the hell out of me, nothing since the original "The Haunting" and "The Thing" was scary until "Alien."
The documentary on the making of the "Alien" films is excellent. The John Carpentar "The Thing" which is more faithful to the original story is horrifyingly scary. His original "Halloween" comes close up on the top of the list.

The scariest movie I ever saw was "Yentl."

Seriously, the one that used to scare me when I was younger was "The Fog." I was home alone down in the basement when I first saw it. I remember creeping upstairs and checking every window in the house.

Also "The Omen."

For me, without a doubt, it was Hitchcock's "Psycho". I saw this in 1960 in the theater when it first came out. I think it still holds up well today. The music sends shivers up my spine everytime I hear it.

Definitely the best psychological thriller of all time.
