Is it moral to have sex in public?

Fri 29 Jan, 2016 06:22 am
Apparently it happens in the porn industry that actors are being filmed having sex in public. I don't mean in a place where they might eventually get caught, I mean in an actual street, in the middle of a city ; you can see people walking by, cars driving by, etc. I know most of these videos are staged, but let's consider a case where it's not. The thing is, when I see that, I don't like it. It makes me sad and I can't explain why. I'm just upset about the behavior of these people purposely showing something that some may not want to witness or may not want their children to witness. I would like to hear people's opinions on that.
I actually would like to be open minded and no longer feel bad about this kind of behavior. Help me Smile

@c7ludovic,
What, are you seeing people shagging in line at the DMV?

@c7ludovic,
I am not sure I understand your problem. Are you upset because people do immoral things in porn videos?

The obvious solution is that you should stop watching porn.

@maxdancona,
Well my question was: is it moral to do it?
As I said, I would prefer not to be upset anymore. I feel better when I can be open minded about something rather than upset.

@c7ludovic,
Porn is a fantasy. It isn't real. There is a lot of debate about whether making/watching porn is moral. Is that what you were asking?

If I was walking down the street and saw two people in coitus on the sidewalk, I would be pretty upset. But, I have never heard of this happening in real life, and if it did, the people involved would be arrested.

To answer your question directly. Sex in public would be immoral (and illegal) if it actually happened in real life. Depictions of sex in public as part of the fantasy of pornography is not any more immoral than any other type of pornography.

@maxdancona,
It does happen in real life, not just in the porn industry actually, and people don't necessarily get arrested if there are not caught by the police or nobody complains about it. But sometimes they do get arrested. Look it up on Google.
It's not about the porn side of it, it's for the public side of it. I agree with the "fantasy" you're talking about, but it's the moral part that I have a problem with when it is not staged. You say it would be immoral, but why you think it's immoral is what I'm interested in. And you say you'd be upset. Why is that?

@c7ludovic,
Personally, the mostly-rare occurrence of people making love in public is not my concern. Your concern over this seems like muddled thinking. Are you objecting to the presence/existence or damage to your sensibilities of exhibitionists?

For example, take the incidence of drivers speeding in neighborhood streets or on the highway. that morality and safety issue is a far bigger risk to the public at-large. Where's you concern and/or outrage over that?

I'm far more concerned about the immorality of wars, killing, robbing, child abuse, trafficking/slavery and other crimes and immoralities against humanity.

Where's your outrage about that? You're creating a tempest in a teapot.

@c7ludovic,
Moral is tough to define because everyone's morals are different.

I think this should be more the question - is it offensive or is it poor manners - in either case I think you could say YES.

@c7ludovic,
What about it would be immoral?

__

for some reason, people seem to like to have sex on public transit here

I've witnessed it twice (maybe a third time - we were never exactly sure) myself over the past couple of decades. Since the days of iphones, the evidence shows up more often than it used to. No one seems to notice/complain about it much, though in one case I saw video where other passengers basically picked them up and dumped them on the platform at a stop. In one of the cases I witnessed, the couple was so drunk they were having trouble having sex - which caused a lot of laughter from people around them.

___

it mostly seems stupid to me, so I'm curious what makes it immoral in your eyes

edit: this was a local example that went viral

Quote:
This past Sunday a man and woman engaged in sexual intercourse on a subway train in Toronto in the middle of the day.

When a security guard was alerted to the activity, he promptly kicked the couple off the train at the next stop. However, they continued to have sex on the station platform.

A NSFW video of the couple in action has been posted on an adult website. The video, not surprisingly, has gone viral since being published online. The couple, which are believed to have been heavily intoxicated by either alcohol or drugs, have since been criminally charged. The subway train was delayed for 14 minutes as a result of their act.

the most upsetting thing about that was the delay to the system

@c7ludovic,
Having sex in public is wrong. Why should members of the public have their human rights violated by watching 2 people (gay or straight) have sex in public. disgusting. If people want to have sex with each other, then do it in private behind closed door. Society across the western World appears to be obsessed with sex, or becoming 'Porn Stars' to earn a living.

@Ragman,
Well, I am as well outraged by that. The thing is, I already know that those things are immoral. But I can't decide whether having sex in public is moral or not. Your answer does help though.
Btw, you can always find something worse than whatever we are talking about. It doesn't mean we can only focus on what's worse... So, even though there are worse things than that, I still find it ok to talk about it.

@ehBeth,
I don't know whether it's immoral or not, that's the point of this post, to find out! I want to hear people's opinions and arguments, this way I can make up my mind. And like I said, I'd rather not be upset about it. If someone can convince me that there isn't (or shouldn't be) anything wrong about it, that's great.
I think I just have this idea anchored in me, the image of sex that society has that should be private and hidden. Most of the time I can get over "made" ideas, but in this case it's difficult not to think there is something wrong in showing the act publicly.

@c7ludovic,
Your question is intrinsically problematic. 'Morality' is about behavior which is ' currently acceptable as a member of a particular human group'. If you don't define the group, then the question is meaningless. The word 'public' is too nebulous to qualify. And even if we argue (as Kant did) that some behaviors are universally immoral', like theft or killing, there still remains the problem of political or historical contexts exemplified by phrases like 'property is theft', or ' a just war'.

@c7ludovic,
When people first showed up, I assume they had sex in the cave,
around the campfire, and as their young ate their breakfast if daddy had a woody.

As societies developed and gods demanded shrubberies and additional considerations in exchange for a good rainy season, man began to do his stealing and ******* in less conspicuous locations at the behest of his crop-dependent society.

So, ******* is fabulous in public locations if you have enough corn for your town.

It's a swell way to get arrested and have to register as a sex offender. Consider that possibility.

Ask the public if they say yes or want to join in then it can be moral.

@Violet35,
I was kidding.
A lot of hanky panky goes on in restaurants, but not so much "sex".
