Hello?

I watched a movie, 'Family Man', starring Jack Nicolas and Tea Leoni.
Nicolas is a single, wealthy Wall Street executive living the high life in New York City.
While going to work, he asks Tony, the janitor,
"How'd you make out this year, Tony?

And Tony answers,
"About four grand, and a bottle of 25-year-old Scotch from 9D."
I'm putting it all in commercial paper like you said.

And Jack adds,
"Good, but just until the deutsche mark turns."

----------------------------

What's not familiar to me is the idiom 'make out',
and from the context, I guessed it's like 'make money'.

To confirm my guess, I looked up an online dictionary
and it was all about 'kissing'.
( http://ko.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=make+out )

The film was made in, like 2000, and I wonder it now, in 2016, means nothing but 'kiss related stuff'.
The phrase 'make out' surely has something to do with 'make money' even now, doesn't it?

I'm looking forward to your help.

@SMickey,
How did you make out/How did you do = Were you successful? Did you get what you want? In this case, it sounds like he's asking about the janitor's Christmas presents. Not sure, though.

@SMickey,
sounds like he's talking about the end of year gifts the janitor would have received from the tenants in the building

how'd you make out is often used to talk about someone's rate of success at something - how'd you make out at the game? how'd you make out in class?

at the end of the year/Christmas/Boxing Day , it's curiosity about the gifts received

how'd you make out = what did you get?

Christmas Aftermath – How Did You Make Out?
What is the best part of the holiday season? When it is over! LOL

Some of the people in our family were excited by some of the new toys they received for Christmas.

Our daughter in Seattle got a new Apple iPad. Here husband got tired of her stealing his Mac laptop so he got her the new toy.

Our grandson got a surprise gift two days before Christmas. He sold the most popcorn for his Boy Scout troop and received an Apple iPod Touch. You couldn’t pry it from his hands. Now if he would only learn not sing while he has his earplugs in.

The middle daughter got a new cell phone and was playing with it all weekend. Her goal in life is to now download every ring tone that is available.

Santa brought me a Keurig coffee machine.

The wife got the freezer she wanted.

So what did you get?

@SMickey,
To "make out" also means to kiss, but obviously not in this context.
