I electrocuted myself...

I went to turn my light on in my basement, and since we haven't finished remodeling, there are wires, and one came out from the plastic covering it and I accidentally touched it. My arm felt like it was vibrating, nothing. Else though. My arm is a little queasy feeling. I don't know the voltage, but I can ask my parents when they get home. I screamed (because I didn't know what it was) and pulled away quickly. Should I do something about it? I feel fine, but I feel like I have slight anxiety now. Help!

@Echo Night,
If you have no burn visible burn mark, you should be fine. Definitely mention it to them and show them where in your hand or arm it happened.

In the meanwhile, for safety they should put a proper cover over the switch wiring. It's most likely the typical 110 VAC. Highly unlikely you did more than scare yourself and cause a small irritation and make yourself feel a bit twitchy. Anxiety, though temporary, is not an unusual reaction.

@Echo Night,
You are still alive, don't worry about it. Get the wiring fixed.

Thanks! I think my dad was going to put the switch on it, but the switch didn't fit so maybe he forgot. Thanks!

@Echo Night,
You are now a member of what oldies called the 110 Club. I'm a longstanding member. All of its members have been shocked by house wiring.

It's AC at 120 volts if you're in the USA. You'll be fine. Don't touch it again. Tell your parents to turn off the breaker to that light switch and call an electrician if they don't feel comfortable fixing it themselves.

To this day, if I'm doing something to light switches or fixtures, I pull out a voltmeter to double check that the wires aren't live, even though I know I flipped the breaker off. It's the residual effects of that anxiety you mentioned (and probably a touch of OCD.)

I'm sorry to hear that you were shocked.

When I first saw this thread title, I couldn't understand how it was possible for a dead person to be posting. Electrocute means death from electricity.

@Tuna,
Does this count as being part of the club....once I was unplugging something from the wall outlet, my finger touched the prong while it was still something plugged in and a got an electric shock. As I don't belong to many clubs I would love to be able to join.
