You could use either student or students--but as others have pointed out, native-speakers would like use student.

Come to think of it, it would be natural for me to use the plural form if the students were working in groups to try to find an answer.

I meant to write: ". . . likely use . . ." Damned old age . . . i'm going to blame FBM, because he's thousands of miles away, and doesn't know where i live.
