Why is 'women' pronounced wimin?

Could someone please explain to me why it is so?

Originally the singular in Old English was wimman and the plural wimmen. Later the pronunciation of the singular altered in Middle English.

It aint. At least not around these here parts, where I'm from. It's pronounced "wimminz."
