@gungasnake,
The West needs to get it though our thick heads that a lot of the world has given up in us. The other team for the moment is Russia/China/Iran, but they will be growing. And our military, in spite of how much we spend on it, is spectacularly unprepared for what is coming. Just like with our medical and education systems we spend a lot for no where near value for our money.

Russia and China have "caught up" to our 1990 stealth technology.

Let me know when they have large "flying wing" stealth bombers.

The US Air Force just handed Northrup Grumman an $80 Billion check for 100 new stealth bombers a few days ago.

this is unverified but we all know that one of the biggest fears for years has been that high quality anti aircraft systems that many want to give to the rebels fighting Assad would inevitably end up with ISIS, and that they would do exactly this. Word is that 2 arab nations have been doing just that, and I would not at all be surprised if the CIA has been doing it as well. The American corporate media has largely not noticed but ISIS has been doing very well on the Sinai.

It is unlikely that Stinger missiles could have brought down the plane. They are quite deadly against helicopters and propeller-driven aircraft, but their warhead is usually too small to penetrate the heavy casing around a jet engine. Stinger missiles also don't have enough range to reach the cruising altitude of passenger jets.

But if it was somehow an attack by shoulder-fired missiles, the CIA had nothing to do with it. The US has been dead set against handing out shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles for quite a few years now, and would have tried to prevent others from handing them out.

Assad is evil. Other than maybe supporting an independent Kurdistan, we should not get involved in this mess of a war.

There was an article by Popular Mechanics (that I posted a link to back on page 5) that hypothesized how Syria could escalate into a large war between the US and Russia.

But I really doubt that the US cares enough about Syria to fight a major war over it.

My nightmare scenario is Latvia/Lithuania/Estonia. War in those countries will escalate very quickly to a nuclear war.

War with Russia or China is a concern because there is a danger of escalation to nuclear war.

Other than that, if the world wishes to try us, we can take them.

They say Lithuanians were Europe's last pagans, still worshiping Odin at the time of the crusades and the Mongol invasions. My GUESS would be that the best thing which could happen to those countries would be for Russia to take them over, teach them to wear clothes, use fire and cook their food, bathe and what not....

@oralloy,
I love it with gungas "home team" sabre rattling.

Im more concerned about China nd its use of "long term goals" that seem to govern its approaches to diplomcy.
However, latley, their recognition of the simple fact that Henry Ford recognized
"HEY, I WANNA MAKE SOMETHING THAT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ORK FOR ME CAN AFFORD"
I think China is right at the cusp of that realization.

Russia, not so much.

Kogalymavia airline official Alexander Smirnov told reporters in Moscow that the protection systems on the plane would have prevented it from crashing, even if there were major errors in the pilot's control equipment.

"Therefore the only reason that could explain the plane's breaking up in the midair can be a certain impact, purely mechanical (and/or) physical impact on (the) flying vessel," he said

http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/02/africa/russian-plane-crash-egypt-sinai/index.html

Bullshit, a poor job of repair after the plane hit a runway in 2001 could be the cause. Putin of course hopes that is not the case, Russian planes falling out of the sky due to negligence is not good for him.

Agreed regarding shoulder-fired missiles not being able to down aircraft at cruise altitude. It's also possible that age and metal fatigue could be the "culprit".

Interesting development reported here from Sputnik News, regarding the Saudi royals considering an alliance with the Russians.

Quote:
King Salman has been impressed by Russia's counterterrorism campaign in Syria so much that he is allegedly planning to come to Moscow before the year is out to "forge an alliance with Russia," Dr. Mordechai Kedar wrote for Arutz Sheva.

The oil kingdom is one of America's key allies in the Middle East but Riyadh and Washington have long appeared to be slowly moving apart. At the same time, Saudi Arabia and Russia have been increasingly interested in improving bilateral ties.

Kedar, who served at the IDF's military intelligence agency for 25 years, outlined four major reasons explaining this trend.

"The most important is America's weak standing in the region, obvious to all and exacerbated by Obama's announcing his retirement from the position of world policeman and the beginning of the American electoral campaign. There is no one to talk to anymore in Washington, especially now that it has become clear that the Iran Agreement is a 'done deal,'" he noted."

The Saud rulers would also be aware of the BRICS nations' intentions of trading oil in currencies other than the petrodollar, and in a market that huge, they'll not be wanting to be shut out of trading.

Interesting times indeed.

And in the article, it's clearly stated that the SU-34 is a "Tactical Bomber".
