Does "are nothing more than their throwaway survial machines" mean "are merely their survial machines that, once used. will be discarded"?

Context:

Our genes made us. We animals exist for their preservation and are nothing more than their throwaway survial machines.

Is it said in the level of genes? Throwaway? We've been seeing that parents nurture their children until they've grown up.

@oristarA,
It's anthropomorphization. The genes only "care" about behavior that aids their survival. They don't "care" about the survival of the individual. Therefore, childcare would be something that the genes "care" about.
