Thanks MOU. We have now a medal, but are still lagging. And, to tell the truth, we expected gold with Ana.

The springboard diving competition was superb. Our best man came only in 5th, but the level of the finalists was astonishing.

On the Copa America thread...

If they keep the mentality, with this football team, Paraguay may win their first Olympic medal ever, in any sport.

The Paraguayans have done it. I'm very happy for them. They've always lived at the football shadow of their neighbors Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.

I'll root for Paraguay against Argentina to get the gold, and for Iraq against Italy to get the bronze.

Those Aussies are terrific!
They surprisingly beat Japan on baseball, and will challenge Cuba for the gold.
It would be a bigger surprise, but a lovely one, if the Official State Team of Cuba loses to the brave ballplayers from down under.

An Eritrean got the bronze? Yeaaaaaay. (I have some Eritrean friends.)

I am watching nothing, I don't have cable, hate commercials and all the yadayada that comes with US network olympic telly. This thread is my vicarious connection.

QUESTION

This year with the cable stations showing the Olympics, I've had the opportunity to see some events I rarely or never saw before.

In the canoing/kayaking races (not white water), I saw men on one knee in a "proposal" position. Each racer was paddling on only one side of the boat. How do they keep from going in circles?

We're getting something similar here too. Australia is a sports loving country, and heaven's knows we love seeing Aussies getting medals, but after seeing Grant Hackett win the 1500m freestyle about 50 times, I'd much rather see some weightlifting (which we haven't seen much of) even if there's no Aussies in it or in medal winning positions.

I'm disappointed that no one has answered my question. I saw this event again (different distance). I'm still mystified as to how people can paddle on only one side of a boat and not go in circles. Are the boats altered in some way?

Does anyone know?

BTW, just finished watching the men's triathalon. Exciting stuff.

That's one of the canoe races Roberta, and I likewise don't know how the boat doesn't spin around.

I 'spose that if they twisted their lower body against the twist of the boat, then they could keep it going in a straight line.

Those boats do move around considerably in the water, unlike most of the other flat water races where they're very smooth.

Thanks for the responses. If you're right, grand duke, they push the boat in one direction with their knee while they row straight. That would theoretically offset the propensity for the boat to turn.

I tell you, dese sports is mighty complicated.

Did you see the madison in the cycling? That's incomprehensible.

ok - they do a small "j"stroke and there is also a rudder controlled by the foot that you cannot see.
