Rice was determined that as secretary of state she would be empowered and not “get nitpicked to death.”

What does "get nitpicked to death" mean here?

It means to be fail at large tasks by becoming distracted by minor details.

What!?!? It means nothing like that. Nitpicking someone to death is constantly pointing out minor flaws and weaknesses until the victim can't do his/her job properly or gives up. Man, you're not a native speaker of English. Please stop spreading wrong/bad information to people who are trying to learn it.
