I purchased Sugar Free Social Biscuits, which says sugar free in big letters. In the Nutrition Facts box it says: Sugars 0g; Sugar Alcohol 6g.

Is it really sugar free? More to the point, is it healthy?

@gollum,
The benefit of sugar alcohols is that they give you the sweetness of sugar. They still convert to glucose, but much more slowly. They do not give the abrupt spike of sugar and are of benefit to those with diabetes.

@roger,
Thanks.

What is the disadvantage of eating such cookies?

@gollum,
None that I'm aware of, except possibly a higher price.

Somehow, though, their inclusion seems to give the impression that the stuff passes through the system with no effect on anything. It's kind of like a pie that claims "Naturally sweetened". That usually means it's sweetened with pineapple juice, which is "natural". Then there's the label that says "No sugar added". The last thing on earth that might mean is sugar free.

@gollum,
Gollum,
It's sugar free only. But it contains less sugar that's it...
