Help! Translation German to English

Indem er sein Messer in die Ritze schob, versuchte er den Schrank ohne Anwndung von Gewalt zu öffnen, denn schließlich sollte keiner merken, dass eingebrochen worden war. Das Messer glitt einige Male ab, aber er versuchte es immer wieder und schließlich gelanges ihm, das Schloss aufzuzwingen. ===>
While he was pushing his knife into the crack, he tried to open the closet without use of force. After all, no one was supposed to realize it was broken in. The knife slipped several times,but he was always trying. And finally, he managed to unlock it.

IS THAT CORRECT? Confused

That's a pretty fair literal translation, I guess. In more idiomatic English, it might be:

Pushing his knife into the crack, he tried to open the closet door carefully; after all, no one was supposed to realize it had been broken into. Though the knife slipped several times, he kept trying, finally managing to unlock the door.

Now, what I wanna know is what did he figure was in there, and why did he figure he oughtta break in to get it?

By shoving his knife in the chink, he tried to open the wadrobe (cupboard) non-violently. After all, no one should notice that someone broke in. The knife slipped away a couple of times, but he tried again and again and finally succeeded in forcing the lock open.

Seems that this a literature text. Which makes it difficult to translate, because the author's diction is unknown by this short passage.

The lecturer made up such a story. The widow's son broke into his neighbor's apartment, trying to get the money hidden in the closet. If it interests you, I can give you the German text.
