What finally did in the elite, the last straw, was the Great Recession.
Which elite are you talking about? Could it be the Clintons? They weren't done in by the so great "great recession". They made at least $15 million during the past year.
THe Kennedy's of Massachusetts might be in the elite. They certainly were not done in during the recession.
The Obamas became part of the elite after Mr. Obama was elected, but he's not in the upper, upper part of the real elite of this country. The real elite are those who donate $250 million( or more) to build a medical school or a research institute.
Zuckerman and his wife are becoming a part of the elite ...but still have a long way to go. Nevertheless, he and his wife have made extremely large donations of money to hospitals and charities.
I still don't know which elite, you've been talking about.
The people who suffered during the recession and are still suffereing are those, who lost their jobs, their homes, and for some even their lives. They were members of the lower-middle class and the middle class, which included those doing hard labor as well as those who were white collar professionals.
Uneducated and unskilled makes for a very unpromising future in the US for many Americans and these folks were never part of the "elite" because they never had the financial resources necessary to overcome financial hardships.
One problem among the middleclass during the recession and even today, is their inability to save money, even when they are fully employed. They don't seem able to make sacrifices. Had they lived during the Great DEPRESSION, they would have starved to death.
