Leaving tomorrow (Saturday) and probably back next Tuesday week, just playing it by ear, not bound by a time schedule.

Did you and the children enjoy Halloween night?

We had a great time. We had a trailer with hay in it and a neighbor drove us around from house to house while we got our candy...the kids had a blast! They were so tired when we got home though! I hate to leave good company Dutchy - but my throat is killing me and I am fading quickly - I am going to take some medicine and go to bed! Be careful and I hope you and your wife have a wonderful time! We will miss you here to be sure!

Where all are you going?

Oh, that's a hard one...I think I have to say Athens. But that was only because of the time of day that it was when I first saw it. It was sunset . Athens is this really busy city and all of the ancient monuments are right in the middle of it - but somehow they all just fit. And I was there on a perfect night - and all alone- so I could just observe all of it.

But then, I could also say the Mendip Hills- or on the border of England and Scotland or the coast of Northumberland or Devon or Dorset - how can you pick? What a question? Don't you think it depends on who you're with or what time of your life it is?

How about you? What is the lovliest place you've ever seen?

I don't like talking about it on a thread where lady vicars might be reading.

Tourist attractions or out-of-the-way- places.

I know a lady vicar too - she's heard everything Spendius- you couldn't shock her if you tried.

I think the question specified simply- "loveliest place" and I guess that what you decided was lovely to you would depend on whether or not you liked tourist attractions or out-of the- way places.

But have you ever looked out over Athens while the sun was setting?

I haven't actually no. I don't think of it as "setting". It is being chased away by Bacchus so that the revels can begin under the cloak of darkness.

Have I missed something?

Yes, I hadn't known that I'd missed anything until I was standing on stone steps worn smooth by centuries (no, actually at least a couple of millenium's worth) of footsteps..I can't really describe how magical it was- I felt transported ...

You're gonna make fun of me now because I'm this effusive American right?

No.

But I've been up and down worn steps in cotton mills up for demolition and it is a striking thing I'll admit. To think of all those mill workers toiling away and the steps being nothing but one sheer bloody nuisance.

I once went to Haworth to see dear Emily's resting place and I got a bit tiddly in The Fleece. Going up the cobbled, stepped road to the Parsonage I got a glimpse of Branwell staggering home skenning drunk. It was no joke. What it was like at midnight in a wet blow I shudder to think.

I sat on the couch on which Emily died. It wasn't allowed but I managed it. On the moors I lay beside a pool and trailed my hand in the water but the minnows didn't swim through my fingers like they did when she did it for hours on summer afternoons. Maybe I chose the wrong pool.

What's so special about Athens is that it was your style choice for hols and thus, to an extent, you are admiring yourself and your transports.
Searching for experience is not the same as it finding you.

Would you not agree?

No- that's bullshit. (that I was admiring my choice of "hols"). Actually, it wasn't my choice at all. I got stranded there (long story- I left my bag in a cab- I was supposed to fly out, but didn't have my passport, etc...so I had to stay overnight while I tried to get everything rectified). I did have money due to my longstanding practice of keeping my money on my person- so I figured, "Okay- I have one night in Athens- instead of moping around the airport fretting - I'll take the bus into the city and enjoy the evening. And I did.
I have no pictures because my camera was in my bag- but as I was saying - it was amazing...I remember it vividly without the pictures- and actually it was a case of experience finding me....

But you want to know the most amazing thing? Someone turned my bag (with passport, camera, etc.) into the airport lost and found- so not only did I have this wonderful night in Athens- but I also got all my stuff back and gained a little faith in human nature.

What's your favorite color?
