By some people, not by others- it depends on the individual characteristics of the person.

Jenny actually answer your question akin to how I would have responded, and consequently have little to add, save it be that I think you probably get to know a person more deeply on these forum type pages, as there is little if anything hidden at all amongst most contributors in the particular spheres we clique in!
Do you understand and agree with that?
to the question I asked which was: Do you think you'd be able to be best friends with a person you had never met, to which I'd like to respond:
Do I agree with that? No. I think much is hidden on these pages amongst contributors.
For myself, I enjoy using my senses too much to sacrifice having that option, especially in terms of a friend. If I recognize a kinship or like mind, my first instinct is to want to attach a context- not so much a visual, but definitely an audio- voice is very important to me- I also want to reach out and touch, to share activities and experiences. With friends I like to be aware of and be able to place that person in a a context (when I think of that person, I like to picture where they might be, what their surroundings are like, how they fit there or don't fit in their lives in general)- etc.
For me, feeling like someone would be a great friend, but never meeting them or talking with them would be like knowing I was in the room with a masterpiece, but not being able to find the lightswitch to illuminate it. Or having the speaker blow on my stero just when my favorite song was playing.
Do you find that you prefer two dimensional or three dimensional representations of shapes and/or objects more? In art, for instance, are you more drawn to paintings or sculpture? In literature, do you enjoy character sketches or outlines, or finely drawn and more nuanced characterizations?
