That's interesting, it takes an introspective person to distinguish wants from needs, and some would say that is just casuistry. Needs are very few, and rather boring, in comparison with wants. After all do you ever actually need a car? Couldn't you make do with a bus or train, or walk?

Do you pare your wants down so rigorously that you are reduced only to needs?

Not all the way. I'm not entirely monastic. It was a generalisation suitable for sensible orientation.

It is a need to relieve boredom. It is a need to take it easy and not drive your body nuts. Thus activities which relieve boredom and can be done on a sofa are preferable to ones which can be done on motorways etc. It isn't quite black and white. By focussing on the sofa one might learn to read properly and enjoy for life the great works of literature. And save money in case a need arises for it in the future.

Are you a pedantic person?

Over language, yes. But it comes out most on these threads.

Are you of the belief that literature can offer insights that you can't get from looking and living yourself?

Yes. Absolutely.

You could get those insights yourself if you were as smart as the writers of great literature but sadly I am a long way short of that.

In the summer months, outside activities. It stays light here until between 9:30 and 10:00. In the winter months, watching movies or reading books. I started an interesting book last night.

Do you prefer inside or outside activities?

Outside activities, like going to the beach, and having regular bbq's as weather here is perfect for such activities. Forget to mention, bending the elbow during the cooking. Smile

I do love mysteries- especially when I just want to get lost in something quick and immediately engrossing. I really like psychological thrillers (books and movies). Mainly I read fiction though- I always like novels that deal with kind of serious subjects in funny ways.
I love biography and autobiography-especially of writers.
I don't tend to choose non-fiction, but when I do find a book about a subject I'm interested in, I always enjoy it- so I've been trying to make an effort to do that more often.

Do you like mysteries (movies or books)? Have you noticed that there don't seem to be as many psychological thrillers or serious mystery movies made anymore? Why do you think that is?

I'd love to be able to answer your question in some depth, but I'll be honest I'm not a movie buff and my reading is confined to factual history and travel books, so my opinion about your question would not amount to very much History has always fascinated me and time permitting I visit my local library occasionally to look for anything new. As a hobby I have just finished researching and writing a story about a Maritime disaster, which happened near the coast where I live, for a Museum overseas and a local newspaper.

You are obviously a great admirer of Victor Hugo, what is so special about this French Poet, Novelist and Dramatist?

I enjoy his writing, but what I really admire about him is the fact that he was so versatile in so many fields. He was a real Renaissance man and I think that's extremely rare.

Who would consider a Renaissance man (or woman) of today?

Do you think a Renaissance man would be overlooked by this 'instant' generation, or do you think our journalists are actually Renaissance men?

I don't know if it's so much being overlooked in this instant generation as people not having the same willingness to practice an art or skill or craft to the extent that it takes to become masterful at it in this era of "instant gratification".
I was trying to answer my own question (who would I consider a renaissance man or woman of today) and I haven't been able to think of anyone famous (at least known to me) that fits the description, although I know there must be people who would fit the description who are not garnering attention for what they do.

How do you see journalists as renaissance men? Anyone specific?

Most Journalists today are either full of "hot air" or are some time of muckraker just interested in selling copy. I can think of no one in reporting or private column whom would qualify.

I think the labelling is bad cos most people are amixture, however there are ways of life which encourage bad, like journalism which goes for sensation and ceases to see the human cost and negative influence
