Perhaps with the steak we should try a bottle of Cabernet Delle Venezie at 16 - 18 degrees centigrade.

Spendius, you thick cider soaked sot! You do not, nor will you ever appreciate the balance of a ruby red made from classic Cabernet grapes. An elegant wine with subtle floral hints and a fresh persistent after taste.

Having a clown like yourself to dinner would be akin to feeding a Missouri pig. I feel your palate would be better suited to a Ruby Marsden black pudding washed down with four pints of John Smiths.

How on earth did you get to know this village idiot Mame?

I didn't know she was the village idiot.

Is that just your opinion or is it widely known?

He has no idea, probably bubble and squeak drenched in HP sauce. I am having wild salmon baked in garlic coated spinach with a few roast potato's, brocoli, and carrots.

Would you care to suggest a compatible wine?

My little whine would be:

The Truceless War 241BC - 237BC ~

The bloody conflict known as The Truceless War 241BC-237BC, fought between Carthage and it's mercenary armies following the first Punic War is one of the lesser known conflicts fought in the ancient world…

Seeing Carthage helpless without an army, the two Mercenary captains, Spendius and Mathos now cited war against their previous employers. Word spread quickly of the rebellion and many Numidian and Libyan tribes joined the mercenaries and the "Truceless war" as it became known had begun…

Mathos set up the rebel base at Tunis and quickly besieged the cities of Utica and Hippacritae, whilst Carthage itself was completely surrounded by Spendius on land…

With the war now entering its third year, Mathos and Spendius grew exasperated as they had never expected the conflict to become so long drawn…

The starving army of over 40,000 men was eventually forced to surrender and their leaders, Spendius, Autaritus and Zarzas (Mathos managed to escape) were captured while their entire army was executed…

But for now Hamilcar turned his attention to the rebels and assembled another militia army, totaling his forces to 20,000. While Mathos still outnumbered him, his troops were now primarily composed of Libyans and most of his veterans had been killed at the Saw. Hamilcar engaged Mathos at Leptis, where his forces were smashed and he was captured…

Is it not time for two comrades to reunite?

We were never, never ever united in the first place Tryagain !

It would be totally impossible for Mathos (Lancastrian by birth) to be in any manner, shape or form be associated, connected or otherwise affixed to a low life, penny counting miserly, underhanded tyke of a Yorkshireman.

You have the relevant facts wrong Tryagain.

Have you not read Salammbo? That was written by a man who did five years detailed research and visited the site twice. With poetic licence.

Mathos has chosen his name because he has read about Mount Athos and that's the same size as his head.

And if you can't do literary analysis better than that you should take a reading course.

Can you not figure a simple thing like that out?

Salammbô (1862) is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert, which interweaves historical and fictional characters. The action takes place immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt against Carthage in the third century BC. Flaubert's main source was Book I of Polybius's Histories. It was not a particularly well-studied period of history and required a great deal of work from the author.

"With poetic licence."
Exactly, a novel.

The title character, a priestess and the daughter of Hamilcar Barca, an aristocratic Carthaginian general, is the object of the obsessive lust of Matho, leader of the mercenaries. With the help of the scheming freed slave, Spendius, Matho steals the sacred veil of Carthage, the Zaïmph, prompting Salammbo to enter the mercenaries' camp in an attempt to steal it back.

The Carthaginian costumes described therein even left traces on the fashions of the time. Nevertheless, it is practically unknown today among English-speakers.

Three to be precise.I used to have four but I loaned one out to a lady I used to know fairly well and she refused to return it.There are sentences in Salammbo which move you from babyhood into shaving in a flash.

I suspect Try that you have been Googling. You should read that book man. Flaubert didn't mess about with bourgeois fanny like Gore Vidal did.

Am I right and you haven't read it?

Yes and no!

I do not own the book, but I have an e-copy freely downloadable. However, I am heavily biased against historical fiction being passed off as historical fact. Nevertheless the parts I read were very well written.

Hey 'oick' I have seen you defend Yorkshire and vaunt about The Bronte Sisters on these pages more than you attempted to defend that other Yorkshire tyke whom you excelled like a god of the cricket fraternity. Well that typical specimen (Boycott, just incase you want to act your usual futile ;-Who? What? Me? songs of praise) was kicked off the air for beating women up! With Peter Sutcliffe on your side of the Pennines as well, it surprises me little you denouncing your County of mis-fits, spongers, drunks and sheep-shaggers.

Lancashire won the War of The Roses, that is why the boundaries are more favourable to us. Those creeps live on desolate Moors and beaches with no appeal to any sane thinking person. Oh yes, and the American Air Force has some massive golf balls over there, some attempt to improve the scenery I think.
