Grass is "nature"! Will you two lunkheads please stop having a go at each other!! I'd love to be able to work in my yard, and I will as soon as this rain clears up & it gets a tad bit warmer. Can't wait!

What is your idea of "natural"?

You two just always seem to be at it.

What really gets your hackles up (makes you angry)?

Do I know that anger is unhealthy?

Let me put it this way: I know that aiding, assuaging, delighting, and pleasing contribute demonstrably to the health of not only the receiver, but the giver.

What can be nicer than nature?

A garden nature!!!???

Don't be so daft. A garden is using nature as a reflection of one's own ego.

How can it be nature?

It has been all the rage in certain groups, for recent years, to denounce and attempt to rid oneself of the ego. Well, I know that "ego" is a neutral tool, and can be used either constructively or destructively. It's absolutely necessary to have for life in this world of ours, and isn't to be cast out as useless.

This is my question to whomever plays:

Do you know how to make the most of a healthy ego, or do you have a latent fear of it?

If the fear is "latent" how would I know about it?

Didn't "L&M" just elucidate it for you/us?
Good question LightsandMagic! I'd have to answer and say the former "how to make the most of a healthy ego". I am a trained counselor though I have been a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom for the last few years. I've psycho-analyzed and been psycho-analyzed enough to know that an unhealthy ego can lead to so many problems and misunderstandings.
Would you agree? And have you ever undergone psycho-analysis or seen a counselor?

There are ways to access one's other self. Take care and not lose touch with it, or it will pale and fade out.

Are you easily swayed by the opinions of others, or do you hold your ground and think independently, in spite of what your friends and associates might say? In other words, are you true to yourself?

I'm not so easily swayed by other's opinions. It's been hard-fought. I listen to other's but I would say that I know myself and can only be who I am. One must be true to oneself. It's tragic for those who don't have a strong sense of self. Don't you think?
I feel sorry especially for girls growing up nowadays, what with all the mixed messages in the media, etc. They need strong role-models and good moms. What is your opinion?

Thanks, devries! And that's very interesting. (I was curious of more than what was in your profile.) Among other things, I've always found the workings of the mind to be fascinating. It seems that when I have a curiosity about an issue, and "put out" the question, an answer always makes itself known to me. As a result, my life is enriched by being able to rely on my own direction for those answers. I suppose because my ego likes it when I can solve my own problems.

Oh yes, devries, I agree. All children need personal, positive role models of men as well as women, structure, consistency, etc. But I think, most importantly, they must have a healthy self-image. Without it, they'll be too easily influenced by their peers.

What do you think?

Definitely! I also like what you said at the beginning of your post. I feel that way too.

Do you have a philosophy or religion that "guides" you or helps to shape your thinking?

Growing up I've always believed in a higher power, and experimented with and learned from with different beliefs, observing both theistic and atheistic viewpoints. The best formula for me has been to take what I see that "hits home", from a wide variety of sources. It's then naturally assimilated and formulated within, along with what results in an independent, tailor-fit belief system.

It would take some time to try and explain the particulars of my beliefs, because they're so varied. This would not be easy! Razz If you like, we could do it on another thread? Very Happy

An atheist friend once gave me a book on rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT). Some of it I saw as very useful, but wasn't impressed by the rest of it. What is your opinion on it?

I've heard of it, but not read it myself. I've heard as you said, some of it is very useful, but not as a whole. My approach to counselling has been pretty eclectic taking what works from here and there.
I'm a Christian. That's what makes the most sense to me. I've had a bit of a hard time, especially on the spirituality threads though. People seem to want to attack me for a whole raft of things that they blame 'Christians' for. I just know that it works for me. I would never scare someone off or cram what I believe down anyone's throat.

You seem very smartand perceptive. Can I ask what you do for a living?

No, not yet.

I've been trying to think of a question that wouldn't necessarily require an answer, so that I could get back to my duties. Hmmm...

Maybe a rhetorical one? Cool

Actually, I'd like to give two:

"When you want to fool the world, tell the truth." - Otto Van Bismarck

First I'd like to stress that I've always detested exaggeration, unless it has been done in humorous jest. Also, never in my entire life, have I ever told "stories" of myself or my experiences that weren't true. This is probably the reason I very seldom ever read fictional literature. I prefer real-life accounts.

But I've come to learn that even with sharing a truth, there are some who may perceive it as too fantastic or "too good to be true". Or, in hearing of a truth, they become confounded.

"The truth is more important than the facts." - Frank Lloyd Wright

This makes me think of the type who will select certain facts out of context of a situation, and in appealing to the known sensitivities of others, twist those facts to appear as they would have the situation to be.

Even though truth contains a wide array of facts, a few those facts can be hand-picked and re-connected to make a different picture.

A (loaded) question for the next player: Do you prefer the fictional or non-fictional?

<Request for devries: In the thread you said you would start, would you mind putting it in the Philosophy section and not Religion?>
