Not sure about round pegs and round holes; after all I am forced to live in this world of divorce and deprivation, which seems somewhat square to me. I think I like radical, going back to the roots of a thing, mild conservative sounds like some sort of bland food additive.
Does the world as it is today make an impact upon you?
How can it not do?If it didn't I would be inert.
Do you think I'm inert?
Yes it does, as I live in todays world. I may not like all
of the progress that has been made, but in regards to
women and woman's lib, I am very pleased.
There can be conservative progress, agreed?
Only by stretching the terms to mean what you wish them to mean. The word progressive has come to mean, rightly or wrongly, the opposite to conservative. You could go further and say can there be a reactionary revolution.
Would you consider that possible?
No! Remember when the revolutionaries of the United
States were seeking to establish their own government
and the British reactionaries wanted to maintain their government ruling over American colonies?
But if it has to be either conservative or progressiv,
I'd choose progress any day. And you?
I suppose,as things stand,I agree. But what happens if the progress gets out of hand which a large number of people think it has in genetics,in nuclear physics,in germ warfare research,in geared financial systems,in language destabilisation,in media hegemony,in over dependence on oil and a good few other things besides.
It is not a simple question.
Do you think progress in under control?
No. Who do you think should be in charge of controlling it, scientists, politicians, business, democracy?
Not a clue.None of those factions understand each other.Forced to say I would go with the judiciary. And I would keep my fingers crossed.
Is there an alternative?
No, progress shouldn't be kept under control.
Look, it all depends where you're standing. What's progress to you, is perfectly normal to a younger child, who takes
it for granted. Computers might mean progress to you,
to my child it is a matter of fact. So, process is under a constant continuation and needs to be.
Agree?
Since I make some"process"...
will you get some progess on the process?
Just popping in! My, a lot of discussion. Wanted to say that Spendi- and Jane, you've gotten my meaning about 'hoping for the best and expecting the worst'.
I like your statement, Jane,
"Progess is under a constant continuation and needs to be." There is progress to be made in so many processes, no?
Hehe, I made a mistake and wrote process instead of
progress
But yes Francis, progress on the process is important
as well.
No?
Lack of progress on a process is regression.
Who would like it?
Yes devriesj, I agree, ther is progress to be made in so
many processes. We haven't seen the full potential yet,
and probably never will - which I consider a good thing.
Hey, for once we're all in agreement, right?
I think we may have a consensus. Dare we hope?
What process(es) would you most like to see progress made in and why? (And if possible, do you have a how?)
No one would advocate regression.
Where do we go from here?
I understood that it has been tacitally agreed that progress in the processes here ought to be conservative and not progress into the foothills of real progress.
Computers are nothing but an extension of electricity. They only represent a speeding up of communication (hopefully) and a capacity to store more information. They are mere technological developments and their novelty should not disguise that.
If you think progress should not be under control I think I could devise a few sentences which would make your hair stand on end.
Would you think it progress to sterilise those with genetic abnormalities before they can breed?
(And that's a tame one.)
Hang on.Not so fast dev.You can't go picking and choosing on out of control progress. That is dyed-in-the-wool conservatism.
All processes have to be considered under Cal's principle.
Don't they?
devriesj, I'm selfish here and say that I'd like to see
more progress in aircraft technology - faster planes, less fuel resp. alternative fuel, better security, etc.
spendius, you are talking about something (genetic abnormalty sterilisation) that needs the consent of the
parties involved. So if they individually decide to accept
that progress, it should be available for implementation,
but not a mandatory regulation.
computers was an example I used to show how we see progress and our children see it as implicitness.
Why are you against progress?
I'm not.But it needs watching.You said progress shouldn't be controlled.That's all I disagree with.
I'm in favour of some aspects of progress. But I don't think we have an agreed definition of progress.
I would see a reduction in the desire to fly as progress. The flying is a function of the desire.
Is that not so?
