@MontereyJack,
There are already background checks.

@Glennn,
I thought you meant the proposals for expanded background checks to cover some of the loopholes, like gun shows and private sales. My mistake to think you actually meant some improvement in the present abysmally deficient system. It's clear You're satisfied with the present gun violence and have no interest in doing anything about it.

@MontereyJack,
There's always been gun violence. What kind of expanded background checks are you proposing?

@Glennn,
you do have a hard time reading, don't you? reread my post. actually I think those are the baby steps and we need far more. Something like the NZ law passed almost unanimously by their parliament, which seemkngly includes a mandatory buyback of semiautomatic weapons (they make exceptions for named hunting rifles) seems like the reasonable way to go to actually reduce gunviolence.

@MontereyJack,
Make your case, or not. Are you saying that it is perfectly legal for me to go to a gun show and purchase a gun without a background check?

@neptuneblue,
Thanks for posting this NeptuneBlue,

I really don't have a limit on long articles being posted here when the articles are helpful like yours. With the increasing number of paywalls for news sites this is the way to go here. Long articles are permitted here in this thread provided they are full of factual substance...

@Glennn,
I can think of many reasons where expanded background checks are necessary.

People prone to self harm and harming others.

People with violent criminal records.

Spousal abuse.

Criminal threatening

Association with known terrorists

Drug offenders

Documented drug addicts

Underage children without adult consent

Illegal guns sales from shows guns passing hands without background checks.

Guns inherited from dead relatives

Guns owned by military personnel who are no longer in combat but who may suffer from PTSD. (to prevent harming themselves)

Adolescents in dysfunctional homes.

Parents who neglect gun safety.

Republicans...

This is just off the top of my head and why you can't even think of one reason speaks volumes.

@TheCobbler,
Where did you get the idea that I would be opposed to some of those? It appears that your bias has caused you to imagine things about me that aren't true. That's not unusual; see it all the time. And yes, it speaks volumes about you.

@TheCobbler,
You were mostly right. However, listing 'Republicans' is a different issue. Theirs tends more towards weak legislative measures.

If you want to include them, you should also include Democrats, many of whom endorse relatively weak measures.

It never fails that people who support fascism or oppose civil liberties use terms like "reasonable" or "common sense".

then convince all the other gun "rights" activists who refuse even that baby step to take that baby step,

I was once willing to take that step. You changed my mind and convinced me to instead prevent that step from being taken.

Stop violating people's civil liberties, and pay massive compensation to the people whose civil liberties you've already violated, and I'll think about supporting new gun laws again.

so why do you all refuse to do anything about it?

It's not like you are trying to do anything about it. All you ever do is try to violate people's civil liberties for fun.

Why are you refusing to do anything about it?

To answer your question though, the reason why I refuse to let anything be done about it is because I am outraged over your wanton violation of people's civil liberties for no reason.

Nonsense.

Nonsense again. It's progressives like Bloomberg who say that people should be prevented from defending themselves when they are being massacred.

When progressives spout name-calling at voters, voters vote for Republicans.

That's bad news for polar bears. When anti-hunting nutcases succeed in outlawing the hunting of an animal, that animal often suffers a precipitous decline.

Wrong again. It is progressives like Bloomberg who say that people should not be allowed to protect themselves during massacres.

@MontereyJack,
We already have federal mandated background checks, it helps if you actually know what laws already exist.

Wishful thinking on your part. He only knows how to say "nonsense" and then refuses to back it up.
