Texas has highest maternal mortality rate in developed world, study finds

As the Republican-led state legislature has slashed funding to reproductive healthcare clinics, the maternal mortality rate doubled over just a two-year period

The rate of Texas women who died from complications related to pregnancy doubled from 2010 to 2014, a new study has found, for an estimated maternal mortality rate that is unmatched in any other state and the rest of the developed world.

@bobsal u1553115,
It may well start that way since a lot of us like me that are now steady participants don't want to start a community for various personal reasons, though I might want to help out - but I bet it grows.

Sorry, Rex, I'm going to try and stop being off subject Laughing

@Suttle Tea,
The majority of the food and agriculture "sliver" is to regulate the prices of milk, bread and eggs. (common staples that all Americans benefit from). So they cannot charge 100 dollars for a gallon of milk. A grapefruit in Japan cost 1000 dollars.

Also farm subsidies for when world markets get a glut of food one year the prices go down and government steps in to keeps these farms afloat.

Also research and development and many food safety regulators are paid out of this.

Because of overlap many other unrelated agencies get thrown into this category. Marine biology, air and water testing state and local governments can apply for grant funding including private universities County Extensions, 4H and corporations can receive money out of this tiny yellow sliver.

The food stamp program may only account for 1% of this tiny yellow sliver. I am unsure of the exact breakdown.

But hey, if it makes republicans happy to toss grandmas and babies off food stamps why not let them get their Christian jollies off attacking the poor and elderly? (cynical)

@Suttle Tea,
I guess you don't know the difference between the different types of govt spending. Of the total amount only about 13% of total spending is on defense, aka the military. Now this chart if only telling part of the story as there is discretionary and non-discretionary spending.

@Baldimo,
I +1'd you twice, (once to make up the minus someone had given you). That was my thought, it was 57% of discretionary spending, not total spending. I think it was an honest mistake, since so many conversations and debates take place about discretionary spending only, so the two get mixed up. But strictly speaking, you are correct.

@ehBeth,
The difference between our graphs is yours only included federal spending and mine was total of all levels of govt spending.

That is still far less than the 57% reported in the other pie chart, and it is 6% less than what is spent on healthcare and 4% less than pensions at the federal level.
