Actually I think the reality is that Mr. Trump is a threat to the US and US foreign policy.

People around the world didn't laugh at the US before George W was elected - took a few years for that to happen. Then the laughing stopped because people realized what a mess he was making of the US and in the Middle East.

The mess Trump can create for the US and the world can be seen in advance.

It's pitiable.

@ehBeth,
It's already been shown (WSJ article) that Trump will be bad for the economy; not only the US, but the world.

Politically, the Republican party and Putin should be at opposite ends of the spectrum. Watching Republicans cheer on Putin, and Trump's reaching out to Russians is fascinating in a scary kind of way.

On the upside, if Mrs. Clinton does tumble, Mr. Sanders will be on the ballot and the Republicans won't be able to say anything about socialism/communism without having a full disassociative break.

@ehBeth,
Trump very well could be as bad as you think he might be, but that doesn't answer the question of whether Obama was wrong about Russia.

@Baldimo,
You don't seem to appreciate the nuances of threat. It's a sliding scale, government buildings are told what the day's threat level is. It's not as simple as yes and no. Russia isn't ready to launch the missiles, nor is it about to go all hippy on us. The reality is somewhere in between.

The problem is that people like yourself, who can only think in absolutes, don't really understand phrases like minimal or contained threat, they just see threat. Is it yes or no?

I think Obama was talking to those people, he was keeping it simple hoping they might get the gist of what he was saying. Some of them may even have got it. I'm afraid you haven't.

@izzythepush,
It's as simple as logistics. Russia has only a couple of major cities that can be potential targets. The US has many allies with many air force bases and ballistic missiles around the world.
Only a foolish, ignorant, leader of Russia will start a war they can't possibly win.

Comment:
Trump says he is a Christian...

When asked to quote his favorite scriptures he stood there before the reporter in silence and stupefied. He could not recite one single scripture.

There are 31,102 verses in the Bible! Donald could not name even one?!!!

How about this one?

Offhand, the shortest verse in the Bible is "Jesus wept".

But even that one escaped Donald Trump's recollection.

How about this one?

1 Corinthians 13:2
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity [love], I am nothing.

Comment:
Donald is a thief and does not even pay the people he owes who have given him an honest day's work!

The most apropos is,

2 Timothy 1:17
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Donald is a manufacturer of fear, does Donald Trump have a sound mind? No! ...and should not be given responsibility of nuclear codes!

Matthew 24:54
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ [a Christian]; and shall deceive many.

Comment:
Does Franklin Graham also come to mind now?

Franklyn Graham teaches the spirit of fear he has no love for all people so he is nothing! He calls himself a Christian while he deceives many.

How about this one Donald and Franklin?

Matthew 17:5
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

or this
John 2:4
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Comments:
God's commandments are his New Testament words and if one denies the simple message of love and brotherhood in his word [by ignorance or choice] the truth is not in him.

Ephesians 4:15
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Comment:
I am reminded of former mayor Rudy Giuliani and his hateful LIES. His speech showed the epitome of a man who lacks the truth, empathy and love of the Bible's intent.

Comment:
These are the disciples and priests of Donald Trump!

John 13:35
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Comment:
Franklin Graham has love for the collection plate, and love for Donald Trump, love for Vladimir Putin who has isolated himself from the world promoting fear and hate toward all of his neighbors. Like a pack of devouring wolves. Do theses people have love "one to another"? No! ARE THEY CHRISTIANS? NO!

There are many democrats who vehemently do not believe in the Bible yet they practice the principles of the Bible. Then there are the Franklin Grahams and the Donald Trumps who have festered so much hate within themselves that they stand diametrically opposed to the message of Jesus.

Jesus felt this next idea such a great thing that he spoke it in a parable.

It is curious, why he did not speak it simple and plainly.

How about this one Donald and Franklin?

1 Timothy 4:2
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Comment:
Do Donald the rip-off artist and Franklin the hater have a conscience? Have their conscience been seared and scarred with the hot iron of hate and privilege? Jesus felt there were people who had no conscience and could become violent if exposed to the raw truth of their ways. If exposed they would run to Twitter and Russia and spout hate incessantly.

So Jesus spoke it in a parable.

This parable was of a Samaritan. This Samaritan was of a different race and religion. They were the "Mexicans" of Jesus' day.

Luke 10:29-37
29 But he [the lawyer] wanted to justify himself [trick Jesus], so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man [person of a different religion and race] was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers [the Trumps]. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest [Graham] happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite [Trump (Trump should know the law by now considering the amount of times he has been sued)], when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan [Mexican/Blacks/LGBT/woman/Hillary/democrat/atheist/liberal etc...], as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Matthew 24:24
For false Christs [Trumps] and false prophets [Graham and you can add conservative Benjamin Netanyahuto, Putin... to the list of false prophets and Christs] shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders [Trumps entrance to the RNC while stealing Queen's music], to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

Comment:
A 2000 year old documents warns us of the Trumps, Grahams, Putins, Netanyahutos of the world. We can either let them destroy us with their talk of war and hatred for neighbors or we can stand together and defeat this hatred and apocalyptic fearmongering.

Ephesians 4:3
Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Comment:
Peace with your neighbor, peace with the opposite sex, peace with those with infirmities, peace with those who are poor, peace with those who are LGBTQ, peace with those of a different religion, peace with those of other races, peace with God...

This is why our US Constitution is such a great and immutable document.

It embodies this peace and unity for all nations, religions, race, creeds and station in life...

We need to drive the money lenders out of the temple! Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine, and the democrats are the only hope we have of this biblical truth, love and hope for going FORWARD together towards a better future of love, hope, unity and peace...

I also got news for the Russian orthodox church. Franklin Graham absolutely loathes them too!

He thinks they are all pagans and are all going to hell just as he hates the Jews too! Don't be fooled by these narrow minded fundamentalists!

Democrats do not hate Jews or Russian orthodox any more than any other religion, they are neutral (like the kind Samaritan) because of our constitution, because democrats, for the most part, do have a conscience.

Here is one more scripture to consider.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Did donald Trump "study" the Bible? NO!

Does Franklin Graham "rightly divide the word of truth"? NO!

There is a right dividing of the truth and a wrong dividing of the truth and only study (which Donald Trump lacks) and an attitude of heart (which Franklin Graham lacks) can foster the truth.

The Bible says, SHAME ON THEM!

"Sheep's clothing" made with cheap labor anyone?

@Baldimo,
Quote Baldimo:
Quote:
Didn't Obama and Kerry already set that in motion? It seems to me that Russia wasn't a problem according to Obama in 2012.

Quote:
Quote:
“The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.”

2 years later Russia annexed Crimea and now you are worried about Russian tanks rolling through Eastern Europe? So when did you have your "oh ****" moment and realize Romney was right and Obama was wrong?

I checked the video you referenced. Here it is:

Now, please tell me where in that statement Obama said that Russia was not a threat? Because here are Obama's words:
Quote:
Governor Romney, I'm glad that you recognize that al-Qaeda is a threat, because a few months ago, when asked what was the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia. Not al-Qaeda, you said Russia. And the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War has been over for 20 years. Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s.

And it's true. At that time, as Izzy pointed out, Russia was a contained threat who was not making any moves aggressively. al-Qaeda, on the other hand, had all sorts of terrorist plans, and they were the more immediate threat.

Oh, and how did Russia become aggressive and go after the Crimea? Because Ukraine, an independent country that once was part of the USSR, wanted to join the EU. Russia wanted them to remain in the broke-ass "economic union" that Russia ran, but Russia itself is a poor country and the other countries in that Russian-led union are even worse. Ukraine wanted to go and trade in the European Union where the wealthy countries were, just like the former vassal states of Russia did, much to their benefit. Since you cannot join the EU and remain in the Russian economic union, Ukraine was about to leave and begin the process of joining the EU. Putin paid a little visit to the Ukrainian leader, Yanukovych, and apparently threatened Ukraine, for Yanukovych caved in immediately, dropped plans to enter the EU, (after a process that takes years), and re-joined Russia's economic union.

This inflamed the Ukrainians, for Yanukovych had promised to try to join the EU and had begun to make changes that the EU required prior to admission. Doublecrossed, the Ukrainians held protests for weeks in Maidan, Kiev, were beaten back by police, so they finally revolted and overthrew the government. Yanukovych fled to Russia. Russia sent arms and men to the Easternmost provinces of Ukraine to foment a revolt, and took over the Crimea. That's why Russia became aggressive.

I should point out what Obama did. Since Ukraine was not a NATO member, the US is not pledged to defend it if Ukraine is attacked. Obama outlined that we would not oppose Russia with soldiers, rather with sanctions. Obama went to the EU and got them to join the sanctions from the US that hurt Russia economically. Then Obama worked a little deal with oil that plunged the price of the the main product of Russia, oil, down to less than half what it was. He also sent training squads to help the Ukrainians fight the Russians and the rebels. So far, they Russian supported and aided rebels haven't taken any more territory.

The Russian economy, sickly under the best of circumstances, took a huge hit and went into recession. Inflation went up over 10% as did interest rates. The ruble became a joke, as it lost over half its value in two years, as this chart illustrates.

http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah279/LeviStubbs/Ruble%20v%20Dollar%20May%202016_zpsigbbfj4c.jpg

Putin is paying a huge economic price for his Crimean annexation. And although Obama did not consider Russia the world's largest threat in 2012, he made sure that NATO was in good shape and our allies know we will come to their aid, which is necessary to deter Russia from further adventures. Contrast this with the damage to our defense that Trump is doing, talking about doing away with NATO that has kept Russia bottled up since the end of WWII. This invites Russian occupation of former NATO countries. It is the worst idea ever, Trump really showed he does not belong in the White House with those suggestions. Under Obama, NATO will be safe from Russian invasions, like the one illustrated below.

http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah279/LeviStubbs/Czechoslavakia%201968%20pic%203_zpsnxkqcp7z.jpg

Under a President like Trump, those European countries will be on their own in their confrontations with Russia.

Are you up to speed now, Baldimo? Very Happy

@Blickers,
This is all a result of Baldy tying himself up in knots trying to justify Trump's close if not supine relationship with Putin. Next he'll be telling us that Kim Jong Un is a really a swell guy.

Obama was right, Radical Jihadists are a far bigger threat to the security of the West than Putin's Russia, and that remains the case. Although relations between the West and Russia could hardly be described as warm it's still a far cry from the dark days of the Cold War.

Crimea is a strange case, it was Russian until Brezhnev gifted it to Ukraine during the days of the USSR. Most of the population view themselves as Russian and trying to force Russia to give it back is a headache the West does not need, especially as Ukraine is not a NATO member.
