The regional chapter of the NAACP called for the resignation of the Delta County Republican Party chairwoman Tuesday, nearly two weeks after she posted a racist meme about President Barack Obama on Facebook.

Later Tuesday, Sorenson released a written apology, which was reported first by Earnest Lee Luning at the Colorado Statesman. “I confess to ‘liking’ a tired old Facebook meme, and I apologize for my bad judgment,” the apology read. “I admit to saying to the blogger that; “I don’t care if you’re offended,” however I do care very much if anyone else was offended. Please forgive me for being insensitive and not thinking of others in the heat of the moment.”
“This is not a small issue for us,” said Reginald Holmes, vice president of social justice at the ministerial alliance. “She may be from a small town, but this is not a small issue for us. It represents something about the Republican Party, it represents something about all of us if we sit idly by and allow this kind of racism to continue from Colorado.”
The call for action comes after Sorenson posted a meme depicting a scene from the 1951 comedy “Bedtime for Bonzo,” which showed late President Ronald Reagan bottle-feeding a chimp, along with the words “I’ll be damned. … Reagan used to babysit Obama!”
Del Phillips, president of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance, speaks at a news conference Tuesday. Members of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance responded to the Delta County Republican Party chairwoman, Linda Sorenson, who “liked” a meme on Facebook comparing President Barack Obama to a monkey.
Sorenson also recently made headlines when she urged people to vote for U.S. Senate candidate Daryl Glenn, who is African-American. However, officials of state and local parties, including their leaders, are not allowed to endorse one primary candidate over another.

The meme, as well as Sorenson’s Facebook page, have been removed. Liberal blogger Jason Salzman, who runs BigMedia.org, reported the Facebook post on May 25. Sorenson told Salzman at the time: “I really don’t care if people are offended by it. Un-friend me. Stop looking at me on Facebook.”
At the news conference, representatives from the community, including Sondra Young, president of the NAACP Denver branch, the Rev. Tammy Garrett-Williams, NAACP state committee representative, and senior leaders of the ministerial alliance spoke against Sorenson and Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump.
“We cannot stand by and allow the political leaders in America to continue to reflectively slide back into the ugly racist politics that we have fought for decades to escape,” Garrett-Williams said. “We are asking for Linda Sorenson’s immediate, immediate resignation as Delta County’s Republican Party chairwoman.”
