@Region Philbis,
Prosecutors in Brazil are reopening a file on him. He is accused of using a stolen chequebook and absconding before charges could be made.

The only reason the didn't prosecute earlier was because they didn't know where he was.

The maximum sentence is 5 years in jail.

(From the Guardian, sorry can't post links)

It is amazing that they are they are the incredibly incompetent lot they are. If they cannot handle something as easy as choosing a Speaker...is there any hope that they can bring competence to efforts that actually matter to the people of our nation?

@Frank Apisa,
Here is a triple winner!

Trump’s endorsement proves worthless to Kevin McCarthy in his speaker bid
The former president's endorsement of McCarthy didn't move any votes.

@BillW,
I don't the Repubs letting a Dam win the Speaker, so I am looking at who I wish they would put in there - Tom Cole from Oklahoma! I believe I have seen that he is 4th in regard to Republican leadership.

I guess 15 votes is the charm. Let the **** show begin. So how long to you think he'll last?

My guess...long enough, unfortunately, to do serious damage to our Republic. This congress may be the one that forces us into default on our debt. There is damn near no coming back from that. The money market is totally unforgiving.

Americans have spoken. The majority doesn't want Biden, and believes the election was a farce.

Those Americans are stupid. It has been proven over and over again that the election results were true. Trump is a desperate, slimy con man who has absolutely nothing going for him from his twit of a wife and idiot children to his massive debts and huge ego. Those people are gullible.

If American politics wasn't so polarized, if you guys had more than two parties, things would be a lot more sensible down there.

Rep. Torres introduces SANTOS Act to require candidates be truthful before taking office
Dec 30, 2022, 5:43pmUpdated on Dec 30, 2022
By: News 12 Staff

A New York congressman is introducing new legislation in the aftermath of Rep.-elect George Santos' admission about fabricating much of his resume and personal history.

The SANTOS Act, which stands for Stop Another Non Truthful Office Seeker, was introduced Friday by Rep. Ritchie Torres.
If the bill is passed, it would require candidates to disclose in writing and under oath, their employment, educational and military history.

Torres says he believes candidates should have a legal obligation to tell the truth - something he says Santos has not done about every aspect of his life.
"His family heritage, his educational background, his employment, even his connection to historical events like the Holocaust and the Pulse Club mass shooting," Torres said.

In an October 2020 interview with News 12, Santos claimed that he was told he would not make it up the ladder at Citi Group because of his sexuality.
"I started my career at Citi Group and worked my way up," Santos said. "It's funny, the first thing I heard when I started in my career, and I started in my late mother's footsteps, 'You're a nice guy, you're very smart but you won't make it far in this career, you know, it is a very homophobic industry.' I actually heard that my first six months at work and I proved them wrong."
This week, Santos admitted to lying about working for Citi Group and Goldman Sachs in an interview with the New York Post.

News 12 tried to speak with Santos and with someone from his campaign and were hung up on.

Rep.-elect Nick LaLota has already called for a House ethics investigation into Santos or for law enforcement to get involved if necessary.
If the SANTOS Act passes, it would apply to all representatives, not just new ones.

"You can not have a fraudulent candidate have access to information and briefings about national security," Torres said. "He cannot be a Congress person."

Torres told News 12 that Santos' greatest act of integrity would be to resign.
Santos is expected to be sworn into Congress on Tuesday.

@Builder,
I don't think so, seeing as the vast majority of Pro-Trump candidates (all of whom claim that the 2020 election was stolen) lost their races in the midterms.

Strangely, they also haven't claimed their own 2022 elections were stolen. Many of them, accepted the loss, actually conceded and did not question the results.

@Rebelofnj,
So, kindly explain the current situation, with a majority GOP representation in Congress.

There's dumb people in every western nation.
Smart phones haven't improved anybody's intellectual qualities.

Tax returns turned out to be legit. He pays intelligent people to keep the wolves from the door.

We also have quite obnoxious wealthy people down under.

It's unfortunately how the "free market" kleptocracy operates.

Pelosi (the de-facto leader of the nation at present) also appears to be as thick as two short planks, with a very questionable past through association, a penchant for wine, and children who also appear to be every bit as suspect as Hunter. They look after their own, and the media looks the other way.

Those people are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel.

Red or blue isn't cutting it any more. Shades of grey are even more appealing.

It appears to be just as polarised in every western nation at present.

BTW, I'm in Australia, so I'm even more "down there".

@Builder,
Not much of a majority if it took 15 times for the Republicans to elect a Speaker. These kinds of votes are supposed to be easy, one day events.

Even when Paul Ryan was elected as Speaker in 2012, he didn't even want the position in the first place, but he still had widespread support. (Funny enough, McCarthy tried to run for Speaker that year, but he didn't have support from the Freedom Caucus. You would think he would learn by now...)

Seems like the House Republicans are split between the far right representatives (who refused to support McCarthy without concessions) and the more traditional conservatives (who collectively stood by McCarthy).

I don't see a problem with a diversity of opinions with such a large group of individuals.

It's when everyone is blowing smoke up each other's khyber passes that you need to start to worry.
