@snood,
Unfortunately, they'll probably get away with it. But, there is enough resistance to their tactics and as of today, every adult citizen has a right to vote. If it takes longer hours, missing work, I hope the likes of Stacey Abrams keep up the good work of encouraging people to not to give up and vote.

It should be a national holiday for everyone to be able to vote.

@revelette3,
The blurry line between combating ‘fraud’ and just making voting harder
Quote:
[... ... ...]
The malleability of claims and concerns about fraud is useful, serving as a rationale broadly for whatever changes strike lawmakers as beneficial. That malleability derives largely from the fact that the claims are unbound to evidence. Were there robust evidence of fraud committed using ballot drop boxes, for example (which there isn’t), the case for eliminating drop boxes might be made stronger — but sweeping reforms aimed generally at overhauling election systems would become less able to be rationalized. The vagueness is itself useful.

By now, the effort to gin up generic “maybe voting is risky” concerns has worked, at least on the political right. In the way that the war on terrorism led to a rash of policy changes largely unrelated to terrorism or which seemed unlikely to actually help address the problem, the war on voter fraud has leveraged nebulous concerns to do what was desired in the first place.

Extending that analogy, Abbott’s claim about the dangers of trading drugs for votes is like arguing that Congress shouldn’t expand the identification one can use to board an airplane because in 2007 a guy trying to get on a commuter flight out of El Paso gave the pilot $100,000 in counterfeit bills. Yes, such behavior should be prosecuted, since it’s illegal. No, it doesn’t really have anything to do with anything.

But when the standard for demanding policy changes is “people are concerned about the concerns we’ve fomented,” this is where you land.

Of course Lara Trump funneled $2 million from an animal shelter into the family business
https://www.queerty.com/course-lara-trump-funneled-2-million-animal-shelter-family-business-20210315

Lara Trump’s shot at a career in politics may have just hit a brick wall.

The former aide to Donald Trump is the latest member of the family to be accused of self-dealing by funneling money out of a charity and into her father-in-law’s business.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue is the largest no-kill dog rescue in the United States. Lara has been listed as a chairwoman for charity events for the organization since 2018, and the group’s president, Lauren Simmons, traveled to the White House for the signing of an animal cruelty bill in 2019.

According to a permit filed with the town of Palm Beach, Florida and obtained by the Huffington Post, the animal rescue spent a cool $225,000 to rent an event space at Mar-a-Lago for fundraiser that happened over the weekend.

Not only that, but IRS filings show the group has blown almost $1.9 on miscellaneous fundraising costs at both Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s golf course since 2014.

All the profit from that spending goes directly into Donald’s pocket.

After the story broke, Simmons put out a statement defending Lara for being “a great advocate of dogs,” as well at the non-profits use of Trump-owned properties, saying the “beauty of the venue” allowed the group to raise over $12 million.

When asked about whether that makes up for the fact that she’s putting money directly into the pockets of a man who incited a deadly insurrection, Simmons, who posted several “stop the steal” comments on social media prior to January 6, declined to answer the question.

During Saturday’s fundraiser, Trump himself made a brief appearance, where he teased his daughter-in-law’s widely speculated run for U.S. Senate, telling the crowd she is “so incredible.”

“I hear she’s going to run for the Senate,” the ex-president said.

In a recent interview with Sean Hannity, Lara confirmed that she is mulling over a political run but that she hasn’t made any final decisions.

“But I will tell you, stay tuned, because it is certainly something that I would be honored to do,” she said.

The Trumps, of course, have a long history of siphoning money from charity groups into their own coffers. In fact, that’s why both the Trump Foundation and the Eric Trump Foundation were forced to close.

@TheCobbler,
So, you think evidence that a Trump is corrupt is something that will affect her chances running for office?

People who vote for Trumps don’t trouble themselves with trivialities like them being crooks.

Can Anything End the Voting Wars?

I confess, I don't know quite what to make of it, not really knowledgeable enough to know if the writer portrays the US election accurately. Basically he is saying despite all the roadblocks republicans keep coming up with, they have had little effect and the news ones won't either. He is saying it is things like the electoral college and senate that have give a moderate advantage to republicans.

I think he underestimates the effect of fewer polling places and with early closing in poorer districts. But he does seem to agree about making voting a national holiday.

Although he is a never-Trumper...Douthat is a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. He normally is about as even-handed as any American can get, but when I read this piece this morning, I was flummoxed. I think he either is being naïve …or has decided to make the conservative attempts at vote stopping seem reasonable.

@Frank Apisa,
Yeah, I didn't quite buy it all either. I was encouraged to read though that one of the effects of making stricter voting laws is that it motivates people to want to fight it.

Senate rebuffs effort to rein in governor’s emergency powers
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) The Maine Senate has rejected a Republican-led effort to end Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ emergency powers during the pandemic.

Republican Sen. Rick Bennett of Oxford introduced the joint resolution Thursday that sought to end Mills’ emergency declaration, which has been in place for a year during the COVID-19 outbreaks.

“A central tenet of our democracy is separation of powers. The Legislature has a unique role in being the eyes and ears and the voice of the people. With this imbalance of government, there has been a pernicious degradation of our democratic traditions over the past months,” Bennett said.

Three Democrats joined Senate Republicans in supporting the measure, but it failed on a 19-15 vote.

The governor’s office said it was not interested in politicizing the pandemic, and said the emergency powers allow the state to move quickly and efficiently to address the crisis.

Comment:
Apparently, republicans in Maine do not think the pandemic has killed enough Mainers...

@TheCobbler,
Opposing tyranny doesn't mean wanting people to die.

Here in Michigan the people signed petitions to try to put a measure on the 2022 ballot to strip our governor of her powers.

We don't yet know if the measure made it on the ballot or not, but at least they didn't cheat with illegal Russian signatures over the internet like the gay rights people did.
