you are in the minority
i knew when i posted this plan, that most of the comments i would get would be from people who are either illegal immigrants themselves, people who don't respect the law, or people that are so naive that they can't see what is happening. obviously, the people who agree with this plan would really not have much to say, besides, its about time. negative comments will not sway the vast majority. no one needs to tell the majority of us that we are a nation of immigrants. we are all aware of that. our ancestors came here legally and were aware that english was the standard language and were more than willing and eager to learn the language because they wanted to be an American like everyone else. until this past year this spanish language issue was confined to the border states. all of my neighbors say this shouldn't even be going on there. the fact that it has spread beyond the border states is alarming to the vast majority of Americans. the simple fact of the matter is that you don't go to someone elses country illegally, and then expect them to welcome your language and culture into their homes or their businesses. what you do in your own home, own business, or on the street is your own business, but if you want to be accepted as an American, then act like one. these comments that have been made will not negate the fact that most Americans have been screaming for something to be done for years. i know for a fact that people support this. every poll i have ever seen indicates that. kokhtv25 conducted the latest computer poll on whether foreigners living and working here should speak english, and when i voted a day later, 96% said they should speak english. i realize that illegals usually do not have computers to vote, but then again, they have no right to vote. now, i imagine i will continue to get more negative comments, by people who naively believe they can actually influence the opinions of the American people. very rarely can you change a persons opinions just by putting words on a screen. lucky for me, i don't have to. the majority rules. sorry for the rest of you. enough said!!

So in other words you knew before posting that nobody would take you seriously.

Well, in that situation, I guess it's good to already have excuses prepared.

wakeup,

Your comment about people who disagree with you either being illegal, lacking respect for the law or being naive is clearly just ridiculous.

Most on this board will tell you that I am somewhat to the Right of Margaret Thatcher and I have been accused of being a Fascist from time to time due to my views on law and order, but in my opinion, your rant is a sad replay of the complaints of 80+ years ago.

My paternal grandfather and grandmother came to this country legally from Italy and were greeted with scorn because they didn't speak English. My grandfather was educated as a doctor in Italy, but was not allowed to practice in America because they didn't recognize 'Wop doctors'. He drove a cab for the rest of his life. He never lost his accent and my grandmother never learned to speak much English.

I remember the stories he told of the papers and people in the neighborhoods ranting on and on of sending "those people" back to where they came from. My grandfather fought for this country in the Army and yet there were racist bigots who got mad because there were bakeries, butcher shops, cleaners, grocery stores and many other businesses in the Italian neighborhoods where Italian was almost exclusively spoken.

It's amazing how people who came in and brought a new language to this land, are so threatened by people who come after them bringing new languages and cultures.

It's just pathetic how you try to vilify those who came after you ...

Do a bunch of Central and South Americans who come here looking for the opportunity that your parents and grandparents enjoyed terrify you THAT much?

If so, I feel for you.

P.S.: And as to them coming here illegally. If you saw the hoops that you have to jump through to emigrate to America these days (Especially if you aren't from Europe) then you too would understand.

Our grandparents had to fill out a few forms and the country said: Come to America and take the jobs no one else in their right minds would want."[/i]

These days they say: We want your cheap labour, but we don't want to let you in the front door, you will have to sneak in the back door if you want any chance at a better life.[/i]

I suspect he knows that. He edited it immediately after I responded and just sent me a PM with a herculean effort at convincing me he is smart.

Its subject was the "degrees" he has and then he proceeded to tell me he can "simply memorize" and would not "have to use my brain to figure it out" anything.

I think that explains a lot Laughing , and have urged him to post that message verbatim here on the boards.

All you have to do is cross the Mexican US border without makeing out any papers and you become a illegal immigrant. I have nothing against people who come to this country legally. And most of the people who talk for the illegal immigrant on this site are probebly hireing them for a buck an hour or chargeing then $10,000 to be transported into the country. Just what the good businessman wants. Cheap labor. A couple of months ago we had a restraurant shut down because everyone, owners workers everyone were Illegal immigrants. I hope all you people who think its all right for a Mexican truck driver who cant read english to drive in this country dont take you or some of your family out. Its already happened here where I live.

I have no association with any illegal immigrants at all, I simply don't harbor as much idiotic prejudice as do you.

So you equate idotic prejudice with being against breaking the law. You do realize that helping illigeal aliens is against the law. I have no problem with legal aliens who try to assimalate themselves into our society.

So was helping runaway slaves escape to Canada via the Underground Railroad. Are you suggesting they shouldn't have bothered because it was "breaking the law?"

Not at all. See, your objection is about more than law, you've issues with certain peoples.

For example, you rail against Mexican drivers who would be here entirely within the parameters of law.

You seem to have a wee bit of an issue with Mexicans, even if you like to think it is about law.

You mean, we should do the same with American drivers here ... or in Iraq - or we should change all languages to English (and than, of course, to your kind of it)?

Look at the two language system in Canada. It forments division. The french Canadians have been trying for years to form thier own government. What makes you people think that when enough Foriegners are established in the south west the same thing wont happen.

Man....you really don't know much about Canada do you? Quebec, and more specifically Montreal, which has a somewhat significant anglophone population are the only places here where anyone cares about the "issue" of Seperation. Also, it is the only province where you will see French signs, which they have all right to implement, as it has been French-speaking territory since King George III passed The Quebec Act in 1774.
As for Quebec wanting to be their own country, it is an idle threat used as a political tactic when they want something from the rest of Canada.

To address your second point regarding Foreigners wanting their own country, why would they? Most immigrants, illegal or not, come to America because life is unbearable in their own countries. Most are proud to be called Americans. The British and French explorers who were sent to explore Canada were sent by Royal Decree, for the purposes of establishing trade. The two situations are completely unrelated.

btw:

Quote:
Researchers found that people who were bilingual most of their lives were better able to stay focused on a task amidst a rapidly changing environment compared with people who only spoke one language.
The ability to keep one's attention on a task is known as fluid intelligence, and it is one of the first aspects of brain function to deteriorate as people get older.

Researchers suggest that that the ability to stay focused and to manage attention while ignoring irrelevant information may involve some of the same brain processes involved in using two languages. This means bilingualism may offer a wide range of benefits for keeping the mind sharp and fighting the effects of aging.

i also believe that it is important to send them home after 3 years, so that other young men might have the opportunity to experience America, and take back home with them what they have learned. the objective here, here is to turn mexico into America. not the other way around. in the future, we can even require them to pass a basic english test, before issuing a work permit. this will guarantee the success of this plan.

this plan is so simple, even a monkey could implement it. it gives them their own drivers license, not an American one, and allows them to stay for 3 years. just enough time for them to buy a used car and drive home. contact your congressmen and urge your support for some version of this plan. thank you

And what happens when your 'illegals' aren't Mexicans? Or if they are, they're not interested in driving their used car (ah, the fruits of liberty and labour together - a car made in Korea? China? Mexico?) back there? Do you and your friends start stopping the traffic and pulling 'hispanics' out of cars to check their credentials? Will you invade a church to find 'illegals'? Are you going to join (assuming you haven't already) the Ranch Rescue organisation and spend your spare time with

They have been called to private lands more frequently because of Border Patrol crackdowns on more populated portions of the 2,000-mile border... set up camp, donned camouflage and prepared equipment that included assault rifles, night-vision devices and Nethercott's Rottweiller, prosecutors said.

I guess you think all this crap about not knowing history covers the fact that its against the law to enter this country Illigeally. I know history very well and all the innuendoes by you people show that you all have your own agendas. As I have stated before I accept legal immagrants. I am third generation italian. My great grandparants came from the old country. They learned english and the family was intagrated into US society. Check out Iraq. Three seperate divisions of society. When we leave there there is going to be a bloody civil war. Check out lebanon. Civil war because there were numerous social divisions. Perhaps the ones who need to check out history are the ones on this site. Assimaliation into US society by all the exalliens is what made this country what it is today. When you start printing languages for every minority in the US you are formenting division. Yes I have studied history. Some of you could use history lessons. And believe me when I tell you that right now there are Mexican politicians who are planing on retaking the southwest from us and you are helping them toward thier goal with your attitude. Assimaliation into the US society so that no matter who you are, you are a US citizen first and a German, Italian, Cuban or Mexican second. By the way, name calling which many of you have done is counter productive. It dosent influence me in the least and shows the weakness of your aurgements that you have to sink to insulting comments.

This "English only" stuff always seemed silly to me. When I was on vacation in Aruba, I hung out with the locals a lot and found out that the children there are taught multiple languages from the elementary level. No lie, the average was 3 or four languages. One kid I met could speak 6 languages fluently.

Granted, the tourist industry there creates the desire to do such a thing, but why can't we do that here? Its great developmentally for the children, it creates more respect between cultures, and its healthy for the mind.

Oh well. In any case, as long as people know enough english to get around safely and follow road signs, I don't care what you speak.
