@Lustig Andrei,
It's really tragic when the brain dies before the body so long in advance of that fateful day.

Did you post this in the wrong thread? I don't see the connection between global warming and a call for civility.

Incredible.

A discussion about a call for intelligent, respectful discussion...

...dominated by individuals who seem unable to post thoughts anywhere without calling someone ignorant or stupid. People, who when they disagree with someone, have to disparage the individuals with whom they are in disagreement...rather than simply acknowledging there is a disagreement and agreeing to disagree.

A2K is a storehouse of mean-spirited people who regularly and continually lash out, agitate and demean.

Anyone of us can do it occasionally...that is human nature. But go to the home page of some of the regular contributors to this thread...and read the Recent Posts section of the individuals. In some, you cannot go two or three consecutive posts without someone having been called ignorant or an idiot.

And we hold ourselves out to be a place where people can come "To Ask An Expert!"

Unless a member of the public is asking, "How can I be as petty, demeaning, and as bereft of personal control as possible?"...I suggest they be skeptical of any advice obtained here. If that is the question, however, they have come to the right place.

You have done your fair share of this, Frank, you are in no position to lecture other posters..

No, Timur, for the most part I have NOT been mean-spirited. I try to be as reasonable and courteous as possible. I have not always been successful...especially with someone like you who constantly takes gratuitous shots at me. I acknowledge I may occasionally have responded to you in less than a courteous manner. I regret that...I apologize for it. I do not understand your considerable displeasure and irritation with me...and I would like to move past that.

In any case, there was no "lecture" in my post...it was an observation.

@maxdancona,

I am not aware of these posts from Oralloy, but I don't think they change the principle. If someone behaves in a way you consider inappropriate, you can challenge the behavior without personal attacks.

That's probably because you never engaged him. Most posters have two faces: the nice one that they show to their allies, and the not-so-nice one they assume in battle. Oraloy, like Izzy, can be very pleasant in the first role, and a rabid bitch in the second.

All the same, I am not saying that i'm out if he's in or anything that childish... Just that you should be aware that some of your supports on this thread may be hypocritical. To put it in a positive way, oral has a huge margin of progress in front of him in terms of civility...

That depends. I can disagree with people pleasantly enough.

But if someone is being deliberately and maliciously cruel to an innocent person, then I might just make Genghis Khan look like a decent fellow.

Another question for which A2K is the right place to come ask is: "am I a troll?"

The answer of course is always yes....

@oralloy,
LOL. You've pulled a Genghis Khan on me last time I addressed you with your italian nickname. Which may be mildly mocking but nowhere near "malicious cruelty"... You got temper issues and no sense of common decency.

Not only that, but there is supposed to be a "parallel a2k" on Facebook, where such name-calling is said to be rigorously censored.

But the people who go around trumpeting the virtues of this no-name-calling-allowed version, are the very people who are poisoning the atmosphere here on a2k with all their name-calling.

It's weird, to say the least.

@maxdancona,
Those posters who go on shouting matches here are just proving you are right, Max. You are right in your diagnosis. What is weak is your prescription, the "what next". There is very little individual posters can do to change the climate on a board. Even on a thread devoted to civility, you will have a lack of civility...

That seemed to be a thinly disguised attempt to do the thing you do so often, Olivier...which is to dig, agitate, and act the provocateur...apparently trying to elicit as contemptuous a response as possible.

As you should know by now, that sort of thing doesn't work with me, but you ought really not to use that course of action, because it can only lead to more negativity....and further in the direction of the thread topic.

You have been one of the regular contributors in this thread. Why not try to live up to the thrust of what Max was observing?

If it gets to the point where people start trying to relitigate past fights with me over "a certain subject," I'll try to move that discussion over to the Amanda Knox thread.

Have I ever pulled a Genghis Khan on you when you weren't name-calling or trying to brutalize an innocent person?

That is incorrect on both counts.

Yes. Let's get the thread back on track.

The problem has been identified. Now who has ideas about how to solve the problem?

@Frank Apisa,
?

You must have misunderstood me.

I mean that every time a new poster comes in with an out-of-ordinary persona, situation or question, the knee-jerk reaction is always to call him a liar, a poseur, a troll. Like the poster "whitebars" or recently "bobkissinger". It even happened to me, remember? Some A2Kers find it hard to understand that there is a vast world out there with many many odd things happening in it... They lack imagination.

Apparently I did misunderstand you.

I apologize...and I recognize that some supposed newbies are greeting less than cordially. I suspect that may be happening because the practice of assuming new and multiple identities has been a problem since the Abuzz days...and it is easy to suspect that is happening when someone comes on full-throttle.

But you are correct, there truly are all sorts of people out there.

I'd like to see this small community of people act more civilly toward each other than the general humanity toward humanity. Unfortunately, perhaps because of the anonymity and the fact that we are physically separated...we often act even less civilly toward one another.

I truly would like to see less of the nonsense...and more reasonable, civil discussion. I hope you...and all the rest of the people posting, do also.
