@dlowan,
Make sure your vaccinations are up to date. It is New York, after all.

@dlowan,
Oh my!

I have upset the wife of a couple who were one of those I was considering for sitting.

I thought they were also considering my sit...subject to coming to see the house and making final decisions about their preferred scheduling. We had not been able to find a mutually workable time for them to come here and they hadn't responded to my question about whether they could come in the evening.

The wife must have thought they were definitely doing it. Oh dear.

Nonetheless I am intrigued by the dynamics of the man coming in and communicating with me only once there was distress. The woman had done all the previous communicating. And she wasn't Judy, she was "my wife", when he did communicate.

Had me wondering if that communicates more intensity of distress? Is my wife or my husband being upset more significant than just me being upset?

@dlowan,
Oh yeah. Saying "my wife" indicates a unity. The two of us against the world, or you, as the case may be. I don't hang out with people who feel the need to express the relationship that way. I may deal with them, but not hang out.

@roger,
Interesting take....it certainly indicates SOMETHING.

I was thinking it's an older person thing...especially British, which they are.

Then I remember I AM an older person and I think the same about it as you. Must be a micro culture thing.

Either that or I'm not being a very good old person!

@dlowan,
None of us is a very good 'old person', I suspect.

What time do you plan to have your gathering. My husband still works, although only 2 days a week, but my cousin is my age and sadly lost his wife this past August. I was thinking I could make it, but I don't want to hit the city alone.

I'm sure everybody knows the time and places. I'd love to see Boidy, but I want to know if all the plans are set in stone.

@glitterbag,
Hey, glitter, do it, do it. I went alone ten years ago and all was fine. Well, fine-ish, I've a thread about that. Maybe your cousin would be up for it by now if he gives the idea some time. Could mr. glitter get his two days off? (He deserves it, ya know)

@dlowan,
Lots of guys in the u.s. used to say "the wife", as in "the wife changed the furniture around". I didn't grow up around that, it might be southern u.s. Edgar uses it and I'm sure he is enamored of her. It stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it though, now some years ago.

On the husband in this case saying 'my wife', to me that just sounds a little formal, which seems fine re people you haven't met yet (or have you?) or... to fit the circumstance of, uh, unsureness about what is going on.

There's a gathering? When dlowan get there? Phoooey!

I've just received my Michael Middleditch - New York map guide.

So, when the NooYorkers tell me to get lost it won't be too easy!
