Redneck Love Poem
Susie Lee done fell in love. She planned to marry Joe.
She was so happy 'bout it all she told her Pappy so.
Pappy told her, "Susie gal, you'll have to find another.
I'd just as soon yer Ma don't know, but Joe is yer half-brother."
So Susie put aside her Joe and planned to marry Will,
But after telling Pappy this he said, "There's trouble still.
You can't marry Will, my gal, and please don't tell yer mother,
But Will and Joe and several mo' I know is yer half-brother."
But Mama knew and said, "My child, just do what makes you happy.
Marry Will or marry Joe--you ain't no kin to Pappy."
I don't think it would be quite as funny if it weren't for the rhymes.
Thank you cicerone.
The rhymes definitely make this joke.
c.i. : seems to me , i've also heard this love poem as bluegrass song, or am i wrong ? i do know a slightly different version of this poem in german, so i think these stories make their way around the world . hbg
The Song is "Your Momma don't Know"
thanks, joe ! i'm glad to realize that my brain is able to retain a certain amount of info even after age 40 (contrary to a thread i started, claiming that after 40 it's DOWNHILL >>>). hbg
hbg, Even I surprise myself with a spark of memory once in awhile.
Put down the bottle, Cicerone.
I remember this one, but it's still a good one.
