Both are acceptable, as far as I can tell. I'd prefer the former for formal academic writing, but I wouldn't object to the latter, either.

@FBM,

I'd prefer the latter.
It depends on where you wish to place the emphasis; on "real" or "is".
It seems to me more likely to be "is", which leads me to select the latter.
