Go to
intelius.com and enter the state and name. If you have the middle initial, that will help. When the results come up, you can filter by age at the top of the list. Enter your father's age and search again. You can also select a city.

There are also message boards for people searches. Make sure his name is out there. If all you have is a name you're going to have to share it. It's not Thomas is it?
Search for photos, inspect your birth certificate, births in your your town around that time, asks cousins, aunts, whomever....
