Bush Declares Federal Holiday for Reagan Service
Quote:WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government will shut down for a federal holiday on Friday in honor of former President Ronald Reagan, President Bush declared on Sunday.
Reagan died at his Los Angeles home Saturday at the age of 93 after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. A state funeral for the former president will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington, on Friday morning.
"All executive departments, independent establishments, and other governmental agencies shall be closed on June 11, 2004 as a mark of respect for Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States," said an Executive Order issued by Bush.
Friday will also be designated as a national day of mourning for the popular ex-president celebrated for ending the Cold War and reviving American spirits as he reshaped the Republican party into a dominant conservative political force.
Good taste stops me from making an appropriate comment:
Reagan's Body to Lie in State in U.S. Capitol
Quote:Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House of Representatives said on Sunday that Congress would pass a resolution on Tuesday that would allow Reagan's body to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol building.
"That will be pretty much pro forma, but we'll do that so that he can lie in state in the Rotunda and that's what we anticipate and we'll do that Tuesday," he said.
I wonder whether it's right to put Washington and Lincoln next to Reagan and, in the future, the two Bushes.
It's been all Reagan all the time since Saturday afternoon (and will be all week).
Go out and buy some Jelly Bellies in his honor on your day off Friday.
