2004 Elections: Democratic Party Contenders

Buncha partisan crap goin' on here, IMHO. Krugman is as ridiculously agenda-ized on The Left as is Savage on The Right. Any who take either seriously are not to be taken seriously.

Wellstone liked Kucinich, but you can bet that if he were alive he would remind his friend that progressives have to worry less about sounding ideologically pure notes and more about appealing to the great mass of voters. Though Kucinich mirrors Wellstone's ideology, it is Dean who has recognized the importance of framing Democratic issues with an eye toward their popular appeal. He has, as well, poured resources into the kind of grassroots organizing that characterized Wellstone's campaigns.
Still, the emotion that at least in part powers Dean's campaign--anger at Bush--would have troubled Wellstone, even if that anger is as much a matter of what Dean backers want to hear as how Dean crafts his appeal. Wellstone believed a politics based on anger, as opposed to optimism, might win one election.
