1666 the big fire started in London and lasted until the 5th.

By the way did you know that 73 countries never got a medal in the Olympic games?

1967 Sweden changed driving on the left side of a road to the right.
It was difficult to teach people to look to the left instead of to the right before crossing a road.

@saab,
My wife's aunt/uncle and their family always said that this was the luckiest day since they emigrated to Sweden Wink

@Walter Hinteler,
1922 the Swedes voted against rightside driving with 82%
1955 with many more cars the Swedes against driving on the right side was 80%. Still we got the change 1967 with the majority of the pupulation against it.

1189 -- Richard I (Coeur de Leon) is crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey. (He immediately makes plans for impoverishing the national treasury by launching a Crusade. As some historian or other once observed, Richard and his brother John seemed to be competing with each other to see who'd be remembered as the worst possible king among the Plantagenets.)

1976 -- Viking 2 lander makes a touch-down on Mars to start taking the first close-up color photos of the planet's surface.

Lots of interesting things happened on this date back in the day.

1781 -- The city we call Los Angeles today is founded by Spanish Governor Felipe deNeve. Original name: El Pueblo de la Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles.

1886 -- A group of "renegade" Apaches, led by one Goathlay (a.k.a. Geronimo) surrender to Gen. Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon, Ariz.

1957 -- Gov. Orval Faubus of Arkansas uses Ark. National Guardsmen to prevent nine black students from entering the formerly all-white Central High School in Little Rock.

1957 -- Ford Motor Co. begins selling its ill-fated Edsel model.

1962 -- The Beatles, with their brand new drummer, Ringo Starr, record "Love Me Do" at EMI Studios in London.

1972 -- Mark Spitz wins his seventh gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay at the Munich Olympics.

1972 – The Palestinian militant group Black September took hostage eleven Israeli athletes and coaches at the Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany; all of the hostages were killed less than 24 hours later.
I will never forget it. We were watching German TV and at midnight came an annoucement that everyone had been saved. I never have gotten an explaintion why they kept the death a secret first.

@saab,
Thank you for posting that, saab. Any of us who are old enough remember that incident with absolute shock. Eleven Israeli athletes, five Arab guerrillas and one German police officer were killed in the ensuing siege.

On a lighter note:
5 Sep., 1957 -- Jack Kerouac's first novel, On the Road, the testament of the Beat Generation, was published.

@Strauss,
Yeah, I can't find a date, either, Strauss. The Ray Charles recording of the song, though, hit the charts Oct. 9, 1961.
