1781 -- The city we call Los Angeles today is founded by Spanish Governor Felipe deNeve. Original name:
El Pueblo de la Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles.
1886 -- A group of "renegade" Apaches, led by one Goathlay (a.k.a. Geronimo) surrender to Gen. Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon, Ariz.
1957 -- Gov. Orval Faubus of Arkansas uses Ark. National Guardsmen to prevent nine black students from entering the formerly all-white Central High School in Little Rock.
1957 -- Ford Motor Co. begins selling its ill-fated Edsel model.
1962 -- The Beatles, with their brand new drummer, Ringo Starr, record "Love Me Do" at EMI Studios in London.
1972 -- Mark Spitz wins his seventh gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay at the Munich Olympics.
