Prince George's County Police Officer Saves Life of 14-Year-Old Boy
By Tracee Wilkins

A Prince George's Police Officer is credited with saving two people's lives - after his own brush with death. (Published Thursday, Sep 11, 2014)
Friday, Sep 12, 2014 • Updated at 8:53 AM EST

A Prince George's County police officer who once suffered severe injuries in a crash that killed his partner was able to save a life earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Officer Michael Risher used a small trauma kit to save a 14-year-old boy who had been stabbed multiple times and was bleeding to death on the steps of a Beltsville apartment complex.

While waiting for an ambulance to arrive, Officer Risher went to work with the trauma kit he was trained on a year ago.

"I could tell his injuries were very severe by the amount of blood that was already on his clothes and around him," Risher said.

This was the second time Risher’s kit helped him to save a life, and it is deeply personal for him because of memories of when his own life flashed before his eyes.

"I definitely do know and exactly feel what it’s like to be on the receiving end of having injuries so great that you need somebody’s help because you can’t do it yourself," he said.

In 2012, Risher was in the passenger seat when his police cruiser flipped over and crashed on the Beltway, severely injuring Risher and killing his then partner, Adrian Morris.

The two were chasing suspects who stole a woman’s purse at a gas station.

The experience makes helping others in need that much more important to him now.

"It’s hard to explain the emotions that you feel for that day in particular. But the feeling for saving the two lives – that’s a good feeling."

Family of Man Killed For Playing With Hose Nozzle Got $6.5 Million

A fatal police mistake in 2010 left the Zerby family without their beloved father and son. Three years later, an unanimous verdict awarded $6.5 million to the family of the deceased Douglas Zerby, shot to death by two police officers.

The tragic incident took place in Long Beach, California, on December 12, 2010. The 35-year-old Douglas Zerby was sitting on his friend’s porch landing, playing with the nozzle of a watering hose that resembled a gun. He was intoxicated and kept pointing the nozzle in different directions which caught the attention of one of the neighbors who dialed 911. Within minutes, Zerby was ambushed by two cops who hid at two different positions nearby.

They never announced their presence or made any visual or verbal contact with Zerby. While playing with the nozzle, Zerby pointed at the direction where one of the cops was hidden, not knowing he was there. This caused both cops to shoot at Zerby, killing him on the spot.

His sister, Eden Marie Biele, was outraged by the way the police handled the situation.
“He never knew there was a problem. Police snuck down the corridor and shot him. He was killed in cold blood. He was a drunk sitting on a stoop fumbling with a hose nozzle.”

Zerby’s family got around one third of the money they asked for. His mother Pam Amici got $1 million, his father Mark got $2 million and his 10-year-old son River was awarded $3.5 million. None of the two officers guilty for Zerby’s death were dismissed and they never faced criminal prosecution.

Not the point, it is simply offensive language and too graphic. I just wanted it noted because by and large I appreciate a lot of your information you bring to this forum.

California Cops Burn Man’s Genitals For Littering

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is getting sued by 26-year-old Daniel Johnson who suffered burns in his genital region after being tased by cops.

Johnson was making dinner at his parents’ home in Altadena when a man knocked on the door to inform them that Johnson’s father was getting fined for throwing a cigarette butt on the ground. According to the lawsuit, the 58-year-old man is disabled and walks with the assistance of a cane and because of the nerve damage in his hands often drops things on the ground.

Johnson went outside to talk to the officers and saw Deputy Abdulfattah writing a $1000 fine for loitering. He asked if he could pick the cigarette butt instead but according to Johnson’s statement Deputy Abdulfattah replied “I can write you a ticket too if you want”.

Johnson’s mother got out of the house just as her son turned his back to the cops and walked away, when Deputy Russell grabbed him from behind. He held Johnson in a full nelson grip and tackled him to the ground while the other cop hit his elderly father in the face. She watched the cop repeatedly tase her son in the genitalia while looking at her.

“He’s looking directly at me every time he pulls that trigger, and at one point my son says, ‘Mom, I’m OK. So at that point, I realize this guy is doing this because I am reacting”, said Rose Gonzales, Johnson’s mother.

Johnson, who is a Berkeley graduate with no criminal record, was arrested for battery on a police officer but the charges were never filed. He hopes there is an audio or video recording of the incident that could help him win the case against L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

‘Give the guy a medal,’ Cop saves man’s life after pulling him over for speeding
Posted 4:32 pm, August 4, 2014, by KFOR-TV & K. Querry and NBC News

KENNEBUNK, Maine – When a police officer pulled a man over for speeding, he did not expect to save the driver’s life.

“I saw the cruiser on the side of the road and I said, ‘Oh, too late. No sense in slowing down now, he’s already nailed me,” said Scotty Falconer.

When Officer Matthew Harrington pulled Falconer’s car over, he was prepared to write the driver a warning and send him on his way.

“Went back to my car, started to run checks, write out a warning card, at which time I heard screaming,” said Harrington.

The screaming was coming from Scotty Falconer’s wife.

“All I can tell you is I took my license out of my wallet and after that, I don’t know nothing,” he said.

“He was unresponsive, I checked for a pulse, he didn’t have one, at which time I pulled him out of the vehicle and began doing chest compressions,” said Harrington.

Harrington’s 10 years as an EMT came in handy that day.

When Falconer did not respond to chest compressions, Harrington decided to use the defibrillator that each officer has in their cruiser.

“Obviously, Mr. Falconer was very fortunate that we were right there. We have a short window to defibrillate someone. And luckily for everyone involved, we were right there when it happened,” said Harrington.

The next thing Falconer says he remembers is waking up in the emergency room.

“They said, ‘You were a goner and you were lucky because the policeman was an EMT. And he knew just what to do,” he said.

Harrington says all police are trained to do exactly what he did that day but it’s not every day that he gets to have that big of an impact on a life.

“We don’t have many of these, certainly not in law enforcement. Sometimes, it’s difficult to quantify the difference that we make, but every once in a while, something like this happens,” said Harrington.

“They should give the guy a medal,” said Falconer.

@revelette2,
You need to get to know oralloy better. He's known for accusing people he disagrees with of child abuse. I am beating him to the punch. I don't post on his threads and he insists on posting on mine. I'll handle him the way I see best and I can accept the consequences. You ought to read about how he feels about women and veterans.

@woiyo,
I am glad the cop saved his life and he does deserve a medal. However, it does not lessen all the statistics of needless deaths caused by cops. I am just glad the story was not another one where a cop killed someone for something as little as speeding and then guys like you come here defending the indefensible. The first step in correcting a problem is admitting there is a problem.

Cop Pulls Gun on 11-year-old Building Tree Fort

Omari Grant, a 11-year-old Georgia boy, was allegedly harassed by two police officers while playing with his friends in the woods. His mother Janice Baptiste is filing an excessive force complaint.

Young Grant was in the woods behind his home with several friends, playing at their usual hangout spot. The kids decided to build a tree fort and started cutting and gathering branches and other material. One of the neighbors called the police to complain about the children “chopping off tree limbs” and two officers showed up in response to the call.

According to the boy, one of the cops pointed a gun at them and made them lie on the ground with their legs spread. He also claims that the officers used foul language. Edgar Dillard, whose wife called 911, was shocked with the officers’ reactions on something they believed was just a safety issue. “There were falling hazards, tripping hazards, all types of hazards, so No.1 was concern for the children and concern for the environment,” Dillard said.

The event left the children in shock and scared for their lives. “I was thinking that I don’t want to be shot today, so I just listened to what they said,” said Grant, who is still scared every time he leaves the house. Henry County Police Department Sgt.

Joey Smith says that the incident is under investigation, but the Department has refused to reveal the names of officers involved.
