The Independent reports.
James Garner, who starred in The Rockford Files and The Notebook, has died, aged 86.
The actor died in his Los Angeles home yesterday, Saturday 19 July. His cause of death is not yet known.
Garner had a career both in television and in cinema, although is best known for his role as Jim Rockford in Seventies television series The Rockford Files, for which he won an Emmy. He also played the original gambling Bret Maverick in Fifties comedy Western Maverick, before starring in the big-screen version with Mel Gibson in 1994.
Born in Oklahoma in 1928, he changed his name to Garner from Bumgarner after a Hollywood studio credited him as “James Garner” without his consent. He started acting by playing small parts in television series Cheyenne and soon went on to assume the role of Marlon Brando’s friend in 1957 film Sayonara.
His six-decade career saw him act in over 50 films including The Children’s Hour, The Great Escape, The Thrill Of It All, Murphy’s Romance, Space Cowboys and more recently The Notebook, in which he plays the older version of Ryan Gosling.
In February 2005, he received the Screen Actors Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award and also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In his hometown, Norman in Oklahoma stands a 10-foot bronze statue of Garner as Bret Maverick.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Clarke, whom he married 14 days after meeting, and his two children, Gigi and Kimberly, Clarke’s daughter from her first marriage.

I always liked James Garner. A fine actor adept at playing it straight or funny on tv and on the big screen, Sad to see him pass.
There was something so natural about him that he hardly needed to "act." Just watching him be himself was entertainment enough. I remember him best as Maverick, a slick and semi-comic western character. Also remember the theatrical feature Murphy's Romance pretty vividly. Watched Rockford Files less frequently.
I just felt comfortable watching him, if that makes any sense.

@eurocelticyankee,
He was a very likeable man as well as an awesome actor. I watched him play Maverick on the TV show as a kid, saw him as Rockford and a few of his better-known movies as an adult. May he RIP!

One of the air digital channels runs Maverick and Rockford files six days a week. On Saturday they show four hours straight of Maverick. I watched two of them last night. They were two of my favorite episodes. Garner became an instant favorite, the first time I watched Maverick. He made some movies I like. My favorite is not in vogue these days.
I had forgotten about The Americanization of Emily. Fine movie.

@eurocelticyankee,
Such a very fine, extremely versatile, actor, and such a very appealing one.
I was always a big fan of his, enjoying his work from the early days of "Maverick" on TV, until "The Notebook", the last film of his I saw. He had quite a career--a true star. May he RIP now.

@Lustig Andrei,
I loved Maverick. I thought he was very good in Murphy's Romance.

He looked like my dad in the 70s; sunburned forehead from lots of time working in the sun, partially subdued black curls, combed down but still sexy, an easy smile...big brown eyes. Jim Garner and Dean Martin and my dad.
He had chronic back pain from a work-related accident. So did my daddy. Simple country men. Loved em. Rest in peace, good man. Both of you.

The Washington Post obit described James Garner, "Star of film, TV embodied an amiable masculinity", I like that wording.
The man was kind of a dick, but I liked a lot of stuff he acted in.
EDIT: I have a memory of him on Larry King or some such show going on and on about his grievances about a past employer, I think it was about when he was avoiding honoring his last year of his contract for Rockford Files. He seemed very petty and narcissistic.
