Very Happy Hey all! I am actually learning spanish right now but I am really really interested in picking up french as well. It would be awefully nice if everyone would post one or two phrases in French with the English translation. Note: it can be phrases or words. Thanks! This would be really nice...and one last thing...please no curse words! Thanks a bunch!

Okay, I'm really beginner, so I will start with the easy ones:

Bonjour---Hello
Ja'mappelle Zedd --- My name is Zedd

Darn it, i'm not sure if i spelled them right...so feel free to correct each other...and have fun!

Bonjour, Zedd ; comment allez-vous aujourd'hui ? Je peux vous aider avec toutes vos questions concernant la langue française, si vous les avez.

(Hello, Zedd; how are you to-day? I can help you with all your questions in relation to the French language, if you have any)

What would you like to say?

And you were right with bonjour; but one writes je m'appelle for 'I'm called'

Je te souhaite la bonne chance aussi !

Bonjour again...
How many years have all of you learned French? I took french when I was in the Eighth grade but then I dropped it for Latin and then Spanish because the French teacher didn't like me.

BUt I really want to pick it up again in college...can someone tell me in plain french (to see if I can read it) how hard this would be for me and whether it would be worth it! Thanks a bunch!

Arrow in fact, it is "Je m'appelle Zedd"

Eh, bien... vu que je SUIS Française, tu peut me demander ce que tu veut (en ce qui concerne ma langue, bien sûr! )
Arrow Well... as I AM French, you can ask me whatever you want (concerning my language, of course! )

Mais pardonne moi si mon anglais n'est pas parfait Embarrassed
Arrow But forgive me if my English is not perfect... Embarrassed

Bonne chance!
Arrow Good Luck!

If you ever visit Quebec, especially Montreal, there are some phrases you should know:

Asti tabernac
Maudites Anglais
Poutine, s'il vous plais
Ou est le strip?

I'm a bit rusty, It's been a while.

Oh, and to order beer in a Montreal bar just say "Cinquante", or "Ex". Uh oh...I think I slipped in some curses there....my apologies. Embarrassed

"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?" means "Would you like to sleep with me?"
"Vas-tu?" means "Will you?"

nb: "Vous" and "tu" are both "you", but "tu" is said only to people that you know well, or to children (same use as "thou" in old English)

Something useful:
"Où se trouve l'ambassade Américaine?"
(="Where is the American embassy?")

Why am I so addicted to Poutine? Is there a twelve step program? Poutine Anonymus? Why can't they make it in the States? These are my thoughts on 'Quois gastronomie.

Oh man...panzade, when I was in Montreal, I was addicted to poutine. Coming back to Toronto and trying the lame reproductions here cured me of my habit, sadly. Now Quebec has another highly addictive concoction, sugar pie....and I'm not talking about the hookers on St. Catherine's.

So, Radical Edward, I assume then that "voulez-vous" is best used with a hot stranger, and "va-tu" best used with your wife.

In fact, "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi" sounds a bit weird (because usually you don't ask this kind of things to someone you don't know... Very Happy ).
"Veux-tu coucher avec moi" would be more appropriate.

And "Va-tu" is... well... it's not really a proposition... you can say "Va-tu finir ce gateau?" (="Will you finish this cake?"), but "Va-tu coucher avec moi?" means "Is it your intention to sleep with me?"
See the difference?

Oh..yes, I do see the difference.

Husband: "Va-tu finir ce gateau?"
Wife: "Va-tu coucher avec moi?"
Husband: "Non, ma femme, mais, oui."

What do you want to say exactly?

Quote:

Almost perfect, only "de" missing between "écouter" and "la".
You must say: "écouter de la musique"

Quote:

Comment ai-je fait ? (no "t" between "ai" and "je")

Quote:
Et, remercie pour aider me!

It's wrong, you must say: "Je te remercie pour ton aide" (litterally: I thank you for your help)

Okay, where I got confused with French was with the grammar. It seemed that the rules were arbitralily applied to phrases that "just didn't roll off the tongue" nicely.
