A border patrol agent was diagnosed with scabies after processing undocumented immigrants in Otay Mesa, California, the agent's union representative said. Ronald Zermeno, health and safety director for the National Border Control Council union, said the agent told him that he observed several people with open sores while screening them in preparation to be released to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Scabies is caused by a mite that burrows into skin and lays eggs, causing an intense itching and rash, according to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a letter to the chief patrol agent of San Diego's U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Zermeno said border patrol agents processing the undocumented immigrants were told that those arriving in California had been pre-screened for health conditions.

This sounds to me as if these people crossed over in Texas and were flown or bussed to California. How else would they be pre-screened? Hmm, I wonder if the airplanes and busses have been decontaminated? If not, we are talking about spreading disease to everyone else who uses them.

Agents in California, however, were not advised to decontaminate themselves or their uniforms, he added. "This demonstrates that we are not properly trained to identify infectious disease and to properly respond when we suspect a disease,"

This is even more alarming. We have disease-ridden unfortunates flooding in, and our first responders are not trained to handle the disease vectors they bring.

As Glen Reynolds of Instapundit always says, sarcastically, “The country is in the best of hands.”

So let’s think this through.

tens of thousands of people have already flooded in, and are being held in facilities where they can spread disease among themselves.
Hundreds a day are being sent across the nation for distribution to relatives, mostly living in Hispanic communities.
Isn’t the expected result a series of epidemics afflicting first the Huspanic communities receiving the “immigrants” and later the surrounding communities?

How does this serve the national interests of the United States?

This is laughable. 100 years of immigration history? We are talking about the mass immigration of 2013-2014 not 100 years ago. We have a president who has stood up for 6 years and made speeches about enforcing his own version of immigration reform. Obama has asked for this and it is happening.

Question Baldimo...

How does the number of people coming illegally now compare to the number of people coming illegally 6 years ago? (Hint: your post doesn't make any sense).

Are you insisting that we had a massive influx of children illegally immigrating to the US 6 years ago?

Children don't "illegally immigrate to the US." Not by themselves.

@Baldimo,
You have this story all wrong Baldimo. This is a humanitarian crisis where children are being put at great risk. This is a not a significant increase in the amount of illegal immigration to the US.

Yes, there is a great increase in the number of children making the border crossing alone. No there is not a significant increase in the number of people crossing the border illegally. These children are a small percentage of this number.

It is obscene to paint these children as illegal invaders. They are children that come from desperate circumstances and are at the mercy of criminals. They need our help, and some of them are legally entitled to it.

Incidentally, I do not hold the Obama administration blameless in this. They should have seen this crises coming and reacted much sooner. However, it is a fact that these children are turning themselves in and asking for a status that is part of a law passed under Bush. Obama doesn't take all of the risk.

But, for God's sake Baldimo. These are children, not invaders.

@maxdancona,
Your bleeding heart is going to cause more issues than it is going to solve. Yes they are children but when did they become our responsibility to care for? Humanitarian mission my ass. I've been involved in a humanitarian before, and this isn't one. This is called taking advantage of our kindness in the worst way. Obama is exploiting our immigration problems. These kids are walking up to the Border and giving a prepaired speech about needing to be taken in. My question is this... How did they get across Mexico with their strict immigration enforcement? Wanna bet they were guided to the US border by Mexico? They don't want to deal with them, and Mexico won't take them, so they shuttle them up here.

It's a scam and I don't care that they are children. We the tax payers are going to be paying for these kids for years to come because Obama and his ilk, you included, don't want them to go home. It gives you leverage in the political world and has nothing to do with "children". The American people are figuring this out. The fact this crisis happened a few months prior to an election the Dems are going to loose, is suspect. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another round of missing emails in the next few months between DHS and Obama concerning immigration and the border.

@Baldimo,
Well Baldimo, we apparently disagree completely on this issue. I will only point out one thing, You don't speak for the American people. I am part of the American people. There are many of us Americans (a majority of us according to most polls) who disagree with you.

If you don't care that these are children who are facing violence and rapes at the hands of criminal gangs before they are subjected to the wrath of Tea Party zealots, then fine. There isn't much I can do about that.

But realize that many Americans do care, and come election time this will be a pretty potent issue for many of us, particularly in 2016. It is clear to even staunch Republicans that they can't win national elections with getting a reasonable share of the Hispanic vote. The Tea Party is pretty much screwing that up for them (and I am grateful to them for that).

Angry white protesters screaming at busloads of children make good politics (but don't blame me, I am not there). When these same people then claim fervently to not be racist while they are demanding that the law protecting these children should be ignored is laughable.

@maxdancona,
I'll ask again, when did it become the responsibility of the US to care for these kids? From "criminal gangs to the wrath of the Tea Party"? Where is the responsibility of their home country to resolve these issues?

The US has a legal responsibility to care for these kids under US law. This is part of the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act which was signed into law in 2008 by then President George W. Bush.

So to answer your question directly, we have had a legal responsibility to care for these children since at least 2008. But America, as a civilized country, has a long-standing legal and moral history of helping children long before that.

The Tea Party is way out of line. Although, as I keep saying, the images of them screaming at busloads of brown-skinned children makes for wonderful TV.

@maxdancona,
From USA Today.
Quote:
Obama seeks change to law that protects immigrant kids
Alan Gomez, USA TODAY 7:02 p.m. EDT July 2, 2014

As part of an effort to stem the flood of children caught trying to cross the nation's southwest border, President Obama is trying to change a 2008 law that dictates how the federal government handles those immigrant children in order to speed up their deportations.

Under that law, most of the unaccompanied minors being caught by Border Patrol agents must be handed over to the Department of Health and Human Services, which coordinates care for them, finds them safe housing and helps advise them on their legal rights as their immigration cases are decided. The president is now asking Congress to amend the law in a way that would allow Border Patrol agents to render a deportation decision themselves and quickly deport the children back to their home country.

Obama made a vague request for changes to federal law in a letter he wrote to congressional leaders on Monday. But a White House official confirmed on Wednesday that the administration is considering changes to the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, known as the TVPRA, to fast-track deportation decisions.

The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the requested changes, said the administration remains committed to the basic tenets of the TVPRA that guarantee protection for children from trafficking and ensures they aren't deported to a dangerous situation. But the official said the changes are necessary to update a law that was crafted when the flow of unaccompanied minors crossing the border was far lower.

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy
House Republican Whip Steve Scalise
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers
All members of U.S. House of Representatives Republican Conference

Petition to Defend America's Borders

Article I, Section 9, Clause 7 of the Constitution says, “No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time.”

I demand that the House stand for American sovereignty and defend our southern border by prohibiting President Obama from expending any funds on the release of illegal aliens from federal detention and the transportation of them to the interior of the United States.

No more money for free bus tickets for illegal aliens, no more free air fare, no more money for a program that allows over 90 percent of those illegal aliens who are released to simply disappear into my neighborhood.

So you have no answer on what these countries are going to do to care for their own citizens? Will we receive any sort of payback for the costs involved?

@Baldimo,
No Baldimo, I have no answer on what these countries are going to do. I am an American citizen. I have little say on what the Guatemalan government does and little understanding of the issues involved there.

As Americans we should live up to our American values (no matter what other countries do). Yelling at busloads of kids, or worrying about "payback" when we do what is right are not what I consider to be American values.

There are things that America should have done to prevent, or lessen this problem. We should have worked with these governments a few years ago. The Obama administration has some of the blame for mismanaging this humanitarian crisis.

But these Tea Party zealots have it completely wrong. These children are suffering.

These children are not invaders.
