Post-viral arthritis - anyone ELSE had this?

Reply Sun 9 May, 2004 10:32 pm
Three weeks ago I was pretty well crippled by 'exquisite pain' in the knees. I could barely walk and no amount of pain-killers could even touch it. Off I go to the GP. A longish examination and he says, 'Really, I can't pinpoint what's wrong with you'. Great, I have my own private disease.

After some blood work he makes a tentative stab at 'post-viral arthritis'. The anti-inflammants sort of work, but I am still in a lot of pain/discomfort. Has anyone had this? How long did it take to get over it? Any sort of tips and hints to make my life easier?

Hmmmm - I don't know, Stilly - and welcome back!!!! - but I do know I often have very nasty joint pain when I have a virus - which persists.

This also seems to be hormonal sometimes - which is unlikely to bother you!

Glucosamine with chondroitin seems to help.

Me, I'd go see a rheumatologist, that is, a specialist in matters that affect the joints.

And, by the way, very glad to see you back here, Mr. S.
Like your new avatar too.

edited to correct spelling of 'hear', good grief.

Just softening you lot up with a play for sympathy. "Look at my wounded paw! How could you say such terrible things about the afflicted". Then ba-boom, right between the eyes!!

<only, my frickin' knees HAVE to stop hurting first!>

Like I said, have a look at the glucosamine with chondroitin.

I hope life otherwise is a little better?

Margo steps on Stilly's foot - while wearing running spikes.

There, dear - is the pain in your knee any less? Mind you - you still can't walk! Cool

Never let it be said I didn't do the least I could do! Twisted Evil

I thought that this type of arthritis went by the name of "infectious arthritis". I'll have to check.

Here's a link. There's plenty more

Miller, there was no infection present and was not proceeded by a major illness. Thanks for the link tho, I would have to alert careful readers to the dangers that can be found in feline or lupine fur, requiring:

Just say no. That's my advice.

Yeh, ok, but go to a specialist. Spend the first batcha dollars. Best of course if there is a rheumatology clinic in a university near you...

Quote:
Bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus ("staph") and streptococcus ("strep") are the most common causes of infectious arthritis. These bacteria can gain access to the body in various ways, for example through a cut or break in the skin or via an ear infection. The infectious agent travels through the bloodstream and settles in a joint, where the body's own defense system - the immune response - fights against the intruder. The end result is inflammation.

Untreated Lyme disease, caused by a bacterium carried by the deer tick, can lead to infectious arthritis, as can untreated sexually transmitted diseases, particularly gonorrhea.

From Miller's article-

Recently, my husband was dealing with MSRA- the "superbug", that does not respond to the usual antibiotics. We found a wonderful infectious disease doctor, who sent my husband to the hospital for IV infusions for a number of weeks.

There I met a woman who had been treated for "chronic fatigue syndrome" for 20 years. Nothing seemed to help. She finally discovered this doctor, who tested her, and found that she had been suffering from the afteraffects of Lyme disease. He made the diagnosis by finding the DNA of the Lyme tick in her blood.

Yup- When that didn't work, he was given Cubicin, which has only been out since last October!

I think she was attempting to clip your nails. You know, long nails can catch on steps...

So my mother (Go mom!!) comes up with three possibilities, each just a little bit worse than the other:

-bursitis (housemaid's knee)
-gout (she LOVED that one, no-booze-4-youze treatment)
-Baker's Cyst*

And finishes it off with, 'Well that's what happens once you get older'. Well THANK YOU Mom!! I'm checking out nursing homes, and not the good ones tho, another one of those things you do 'once you get older'.

*horrible pain, only cured by horribly painful surgery
