He says" Apparently" because she ditched him with grandpa and grandma as she pursued her life. Leave it to Barack to never understand that others made the choice to leave him on his own. What we have here is the classic chicken/egg story...was Barack abandoned because he is a dick, or did he become a dick because he was abandoned?
