Does "went by the name of Einstein-Marity" mean "was named Einstein-Marity"?

Context:

Ioffe's statements appeared fifty years after he had read the 1905 papers. It stuck with him all those many years that the papers were indelibly signed "Einstein-Marity". How could Ioffe have known that Mileva Maric went by the name of Einstein-Marity, if the name had not appeared on the 1905 papers? Joffe could not have known that Albert went by the name of "Einstein-Marity", because Albert Einstein never did.[34]

Does "went by the name of Einstein-Marity" mean "was named Einstein-Marity"?

"named Einstein-Marity": means the name that was given, at birth to the infant, by his mother and/or father. This is the name that appears on the birth-certificate.

"went by the name of "Einstein-Marity": this is the name that his associates/friends knew him by. It may or may not have been the name present on the birth certificate.
A good example may be the name of Joseph, sometimes given to male babies. The birth certificate will say the first name as "Joseph", while the child/adult may be known to his friends and/ or associates by the nickname "Joe".

Bullshit.
Mileva Marić was never called Nancy.

@Miller,
"Einstein-Marity" is her name on the wedding certificate as well as on her tombstone (Marity being the Hungarian transcript of her maiden name Марић [Marić]).

@oristarA,
EVERYBODY at the Workingman's Circle knew her as Nancy. She was the recording secretary of the Zurich branch of the IWW. Its been documented in several books including Zola Westernicht's exhaustive biography on Vita Sackville-West in "The Fabians: Glory Bound, Bound for France".

Usually native speakers use the construction "go by the name of" when somebody habitually uses a name different from their 'real' name in some way. It could be a modified version of their real name, or a completely false name.

Sounds cool.
But have you copied the title of the biography from your book shelf? Google and Books Google offer no hits for The Fabians: Glory Bound, Bound for France.

I very strongly suspect that bobsal was being mischievous and that he or she invented that reference. I am not sure why, unless to cause confusion. His or her posting history suggests a certain lack of seriousness. Treat posts under that name with caution.

Also the IWW (the International Workers Of The World, or "the Wobblies") was a mainly US organisation, despite its name, so a Zürich branch would have been unlikely. I think the post was intended as some kind of "joke". By an idiot troll.

But, that was only after she'd had the operation.
