@hawkeye10,
Why don't you move to some oriental countries where every minute is disciplined.

Our colleges "catch up' in to how we originally practice K level education . One of the reasons that the world sends its kids to us for advanced degrees.

Svereal school systems (like parochials) only teach to the quick learners and the others, like some Euro countries "sort" out the not-o-quick for trade school or business training (course business training hs gotten quite hot in the last 35 years)

judging from the asian tiger moms in america that I read about where they differ from regular American parents (not counting the poor) is that they refuse to spend huge amounts of their day following or pulling their kids. Tiger Moms set their kids upon tasks and then go about their days, they know that the kids will comply without policing and the kids are expected to be self sufficient . Where as a regular mom will spend three hours a night begging and cajoling their kids to do their homework, ending up doing much of it, the tiger mom says nothing, and the kids does their homework on their own and by themselves.

@hawkeye10,
The above post was simplified for brevity...American dads are routinely on homework begging duty along with moms.

@hawkeye10,
maybe "tiger moms" was a term needed in US. In Taiwan and Mainland, school was a life in itself

FM and Hawk make good points.
Once the helicopter parents quit hovering over their children the college profs are allowed to do their job: teach, not manage herds of children.
I had an incredibly stressful year teaching 8 year-olds where the main emphasis was on avoiding lawsuits. I quit teaching.
No lie.

You're likely very good at instructing them to be "academics".

@Ragman,
He wasn't, I'd seen him teach.

As Pan has pointed out our kids are about 2 years ahead of yours, and it's not because of any greater intelligence, so it has to be teaching methods. Small group work encourages kids to think for themselves and collaborate more, and thus better equips them for university.

From what I've seen in popular culture it's common for teachers in America to take outside employment during the Summer break just to make ends meet. That doesn't happen so much over here.

Our Summer break runs from the end of July to the beginning of September. It's about half as long as yours. That also makes a difference.

Unfortunately you seem to have more than your fair share of arseholes, Foofie being a prime example. I've put him on ignore, because he seems to bring out the worst in me, and I don't want to sink to his level any more.

"Sink to his level"? I don't throw ad hominems. I just give observations that are not considered complimentary. And, this gets some people totally bent out of shape. I guess I don't pander to the pecking order that some people have become accustomed to. You know: no offensive remarks about Catholicism, no offensive remarks about western nations, no offensive remarks about cradle to grave welfare socialism.

What I learned on A2K is that some people are above reproach, in their respective opinion, in my opinion. That is so laughable, since they don't even know how they lived their lives cloistered in a mutual admiration society. Try walking in my shoes and learn the art of not acting out one's contempt.

I still say Britain should start each day by thanking God for the U.S. saving its arse twice in the 20th century (WWI would have been a stalemate without the U.S., and then 20th century industrialization would have been very different without all the oil from the new countries carved out of the Ottoman Empire).

P.S.: If one doesn't want my posting to them, it would behoove them to not mention my name. I answer to postings referring to "Foofie." Sometimes people are their own worst enemy, as many a boss says of employees that do not know how to get along with everyone. I obviously prefer to get along with no one, since I hear a different drummer, and have a different goal than the other posters.

No, you don't. You often fail to address many posts that illustrate that both you and the USA, despite attempts to hide it behind steaming piles of bullshit, are, deep down, nothing short of evil.

@JTT,
Sorry couldn't help myself.. ( feeding the troll and all). Your replies always begin with...I hate America...you're boring! Don't you have anything else to say? Nothing else to share? Do you consider yourself some kind of savior? If you do, you suck at it. Generalizations of people in general are usually wrong. Has that ever crossed your brain?

You know that to be a falsehood, don't you, Germy?

I have explained many times. I don't hate America or Americans. I hate what America does, has done and I hate how Americans turn themselves into liars, hypocrites and apologists for war criminals and terrorists.

I hate how Americans, and you, hide behind propaganda and lies to defend an evil that is the equivalent to what the Nazis did. Are you comfortable with what the Nazis did too?

Perhaps that's because all of the Mexicans in the area who didn't detest Americans had already crossed over into our country?

Would you like to hear my anecdotes that prove all Englishmen are arseholes, and all Frenchies are rude bastards?

I actually call you Americans for Christ's sake. I don't call you yanks, or septics, which is the norm. (In case you wondered it's rhyming slang, septic tank/yank they're both full of ****) And that's why when you were with your friends in Britain, so many of them were talking about the need to keep a cut clean in case it went septic. Remember that?

No, I don't remember that. I've never heard the word "septic" used in that context before. But perhaps I wasn't running around with the rabid anti-American crowd that you hang with. Personally, I could care less if you call me a "yank". Have you heard Americans don't like being called yanks?

Sorry, I'm just telling you how it is. Now you can go back to burying your head in the sand and blaming it on everyone else.

Please believe me that I'm quite sincere when I tell you I don't give a crap about your mess of an explanation about why everyone else rightfully hates Americans, but you are our strongest supporter.

Sorry, I'm just telling YOU how it is.

However, how many foreigners would be elated to wake up one day and find themselves living a very comfortable existence as an American citizen? Perhaps, that should be the Cinderella story for the 21st century? I'm surprised Hollywood didn't do the movie yet?

Think of what foreigners would suddenly have to adjust to: adequate dental care; available specialists in medicine; inexpensive food; free libraries; and best of all, no fear of their country being invaded one night. There is just no way to compete with a 3,000 mile wide nation. Comparing it to another nation is just an exercise in silliness, in my opinion.
