Context:

Several small teams have also taken their spot among the countries, including athletes from Bermuda, Venezuela and Liechtenstein.

Canada’s large delegation was given a loud welcome in their first Winter Olympics since hosting the games in 2010.

Christine Brennan: Here comes Germany, with Lindsey Vonn’s friend and rival, Alpine skier Maria Hoefl-Riesch, carrying the flag.

Rachel Axon: As the ceremony sped through the Parade of Nations, Belarus received the most applause early in the program. A former member of the Soviet Union, the country maintains a close relationship with Russia.

So did a small delegation from Georgia, another former Soviet republic. Officials in that country considered boycotting the Games because of ongoing tensions between the two countries.

We here in the United States have a spot in the games. So do the teams from Germany, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, France…etc.

The article is calling attention to the fact that smaller countries have also taken “their spot” in the games.

Just an expression!

@oristarA,

Taken their place.

The small delegations (two, three people) were included (were given a spot) among big delegations from the main winter-sports countries.
